Youth Commission 8-26-20 Date:Wednesday, August 26, 2020 1:48:58 PM [NOTICE: Caution: External Email] Please read aloud. Non-Agenda Public Comment. Dear Commissioners, This is Kelly McCormick. Im a Public Health Educator with San Dieguito Alliance. I would like to welcome new members of the Youth Commission and thank returning members for your service to the City of Encinitas, particularly for your dedication to improving the lives of young people in our community. As you may know, after this meeting, the City Council will hold a Public Hearing on a proposal to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products in the city. This is due, in large part, to your work on the issue. Last year, Council Member Joe Mosca asked the Youth Commission to study the impact of flavored tobacco and make a recommendation on a ban. You concluded that a ban was warranted, recognizing that companies use flavored tobacco products and e-liquids to attract young users, that nicotine is highly addictive, and that vaping, smoking, and smokeless tobacco products can cause serious health problems and premature death. Banning the sale of flavored tobacco would send a strong message that you recognize what the tobacco industry is doing and that youre taking a stand against it. The ban also would help promote better health for your friends, classmates, and future teenagers by making these products less available. Again, congratulations on your hard work.
