1. CALL TO ORDER
Chair Bruhahn called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m.
2. ROLL CALL
Present: Commissioners Bruhahn (leaving at 5:28), Drewelow (leaving at 5:23),
Vitenson, Muir, Galloway, Kulick, Sakai (leaving at 5:31), Tommy Yarbrough (leaving at
5:28), and Tyler Yarbrough (leaving at 5:28),
Also Present: Recreation Supervisor Rundle, Recreation Services Manager Karlen,
Recreation Supervisor Hernandez, and Management Analyst Morrow
Absent: Commissioners Gilligan and Schneider

4. SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS
Dr. Tim Lueker, Scripps Institute of Oceanography Community Outreach for
Public Education (SCOPE), presented on climate change and sea level rise.
Dr. Lueker encouraged the youth leaders to learn the science of climate
change. His website, related to coral reef mosaic projects, is: drtimfineart.com

ABSENT.)

Focus Area: Sea Level Rise Dr. Tim Lueker, Scripps Institute of Oceanography Community
1 Subcommittee Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE), presented on sea level
rise.
Focus Area: EV Charging Station
2 Manager Karlen provided an update on the EV Charging Station.
Focus Area: Coastal Science
3 Education Program No update.
4 Focus Area: Urban Forestry Supervisor Rundle indicated the Arbor Day event will be on April
13.
Focus Area: Buffer Bike Lanes
5 No update.
Focus Area: Standard Pacific
6 Park Site No update.
Focus Area: Intergenerational Supervisor Rundle asked for additional volunteers for this focus
7 Recreation Programming area. Commissioners Bruhahn and Muir volunteered to join
Commissioner Sakai.
8 Focus Area: 1-5 North Project Completed.
9 Focus Area: School District No update.

10 Improvement Project No update.
Focus Area: Cardiff Train Platform Supervisor Rundle indicated he is planning a related hike for
11 and Trail Project Youth Commissioners in May.
Focus Area: Encinitas Fire Commissioners Sakai and Vitenson reported on the Day in the
12 Department Life of a Firefighter event held February 9.
Focus Area: Zero Waste/ Food Supervisor Rundle asked for additional volunteers to help with
13 Recycling Program food recycling at the 2019 State of the City event.
Focus Area: Attend a minimum of Supervisor Rundle asked for additional volunteers to help with
14 two City Sponsored Events additional upcoming events:
• April 20—Spring Egg Hunt
• May— Movie in the Park

Supervisor Rundle announced upcoming events including: State of the City
Address March 26, Arbor Day April 13, and the Spring Egg Hunt April 20.

9A. Department Updates — Manager Karlen
Manager Karlen announced summer programming is open; the most
popular programs being Beach Kids, Junior Lifeguards, and the Surf
program. The qualifying swim tests for Junior Lifeguards will be held in the
spring this year. He said there are job opportunities for Seaside Day
Camp.
9C. Shark Shacks — Supervisor Hernandez
Recreation Supervisor Hernandez announced that Dr. Chris Lowe,
Director of the Shark Lab at Cal State University Long Beach (CSULB),
will present information to the Commission on April 3. Hernandez
indicated a flyer would be emailed to Commissioners.
