We understand that the City of Encinitas requires a letter from the soils engineer for this pool that is to be located within 10 feet from an adjacent descending slope. It should be noted that this letter was prepared based on visual observations only and no subsurface excavations were performed. Based upon our conversation and a review of your pool plans, we understand that the proposed swimming pool will be located in the rear (west) portion of the lot. The west edge of the pool is to be located approximately 3 feet 6 inches from the top of a descending Fill slope approximately 10 feet In height with a gradlent of approximately 2:1 (horizontal to vertical). We understand that this lot is part of a 4 -lot residential development that was graded in the past 5 years, and mass grading consisted of cuts and fills to create relatively level building pads. The grading operation was performed under the observation and testing of Southern California Soil & Testing, Inc. It appears that the rear yard of the subject property is well suited for the proposed pool. However, we should make observations of the exposed soil conditions during the pool excavation process. 7420 TRADE STREET* SAN DIEGO, CA. 92121 • (858) 549.7222 0 FAX: (1158) 549 -1604 0 EMAIL: gwtech@gel- sd.com Yuri Swimming Pool Job No. 10 -9830 Encinitas, California Page 2 Based on a review of pool engineering plans by Pool Engineering, Inc., the west wall of the proposed pool will require a free - standing wall design (able to support the water pressure) due to the adjacent descending slope (Detail #501). In addition, the pool shell's structural steel reinforcement should be based on an allowable soil bearing capacity of 1,500 psf and a soil equivalent fluid weight of at least 45 pcf for the designed soil- retaining portion of the shell (except the west side). This should be indicated in the pool plans and structural calculations. We also recommend that a representative of Geotechnica/ Exploration, Inc. observe the proposed pool excavation to verify the soil conditions, expansion Index, and to confirm the soil pressure for design of the swimming pool shell section. In addition, we should verify whether or not a transition cut/fill line exists at the bottom of the pool excavation. The findings and opinions presented herein have been made in accordance with current generally accepted principles and practice in the field of geotechnical engineering. No warranty, either expressed or implied, is made. Thank you for this opportunity to be of service. Should you have any questions regarding this letter, please contact our office. Reference to our Job No. 10 -9830 will help expedite a response to your inquiries. Respectfully submitted, GEOTECHNICAL EXPLORATION, INC. eiser, Senior Project Geologist l Iaim rros, fP.. E.
