Approve Minutes of April 15, 1999 meeting. ITEM # 2 Welcome by the Mayor. Mayor Cameron introduced Peder Norby. Peder showed the Announcements tape for the new Encinitas commercials produced by Media 101 and Daniels Cablevision. ITEM #3 Guest Speaker: Michael Oshman, Director of the Green Restaurant Association. Mr. Regular Agenda Oshman explained briefly what the "Green" Restaurant Association (GRA) is all about. GRA was established to help restaurants become more environmentally responsible. (such as less paper (menus), recycled goods, etc.) What are we doing in Encinitas? We are starting a Green Restaurant Row. The goal is to get half of the restaurants in the community "green ". It's good for business to be environmentally responsible. The image will be good for Encinitas. Some things to do: if you go to a green restaurant, say "thank you " for being "green "; if you go to a non -green restaurant, leave "tip cards" (small cards asking the owner /manager to become "green "; and basically spread the word in the community. GRA won City of San Diego 1999 Recycling Award as well as in 1998 and 1997. GRA won the 1998 Sierra Club Award and has been featured on CNN. The "green concept" has been taken very well by consumers. There is a Bill AB939 established in 1992 that says that by 1996, there should be a 25% reduction in waste from 1990 waste levels and a 50% reduction by the year 2000. Mayor Cameron thanked Mr. Oshnian for coming today and asked us all to be more environmentally responsible. ITEM #3 continued ITEM #4 Oral Communications Deputy Mayor Dennis Holz gave a brief update on the new brochure. Subcommittee has had two meetings. Some issues are being worked through such as the purpose of the brochure: to attract tourists. Other issues are: how would it be distributed (obvious may be mailings and tradeshows); something small enough to fit into an envelop (maybe a series of inserts); use of images that would become branding statement; integrate with websites or other images that would promote our City. Bob Rausch is undertaking the demographics, such as websites, newspapers, etc. The goal is to put it all together and look at a profile: who is coming and where are they coming from. We'd like a volunteer panel to look at our effort and critique it. Then we would create a final draft for other groups in the City to look at. City Council has authorized $10,000 for expenditure of the brochure. Our next meeting is Monday, May 10 at 8:00 am in the Carnation room. Mary Trimmins spoke about the Tourism Summit in Oceanside. Gave a brief overview of the summit.
