ACTION: COMMISSIONERSTHUMMOVED AND SABECKSECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE APRIL11,2016,REGULAR MEETING. MOTION CARRIED: AYES: FILSINGER, MEYERS, SABECK,STEFANKO,TANHA AND THUM; NAYS: NONE; ABSENT: KUTA; ABSTAIN: NONE. 6.ACTION ITEMS -OLD BUSINESS 6A.Make Recommendations and Finalize the 2016-17 Commission Work Plan. Commissionersand Arts AdministratorGilliamreviewed the 2016-17 Work Plan, covering six areas of focus: Arts Advocacy, Arts Education, Arts Venues, Performing Arts, Public Art and Visual Art. Goals and intended outcomes were clarified. Two items (promotion of performances by local theatre companies and incorporation of dance performances into existing events) were removed from the work plan, as it was decided that these areprimarily staff responsibilities. MOTION CARRIED: AYES: MEYERS, SABECK,STEFANKO AND TANHA; NAYS: NONE; ABSENT: KUTA; ABSTAIN: NONE. 7.ACTION ITEMS -NEW BUSINESS None. 8.INFORMATIONAL ITEMS 8A.Arts Education Ad Hoc Report. This item was covered under 6A. 8B. Public Art Ad Hoc Report: K Street Pocket Park,Marine Safety Center, Active Transportation Plan. Arts Administrator Gilliamreported that a recent meeting was held with planner Anna Yentile to discuss incorporation of public art into the roadway plan. A shared Google Doc is being updated in order to provide examples of public art for Ms. Yentile. Arts Administrator Gilliamand Commissioner Sabeck recently met with Engineering Deputy Director Edward Deane in order to review architectural requirements for the proposed public art at K Street Pocket Park. 8C.Encinitas Student Film Festival Report. Commissioner Filsinger reported that the film symposium was a success, with approximately 120 high school and college aged students attending. Both students and faculty provided great feedback. Several school faculty members suggested the idea of a summer camp. Commissioner Filsinger raised the idea of creating an advisory committee. Commissioner Myers also attended the symposium, and described it as a very unique and enjoyable experience. 8D. Encinitas Friends of the Arts Report. Commissioner Tanha reported that the EFA recently put on the ‘Passport to Africa’event, their fourth such event. While challenging to plan, the event was well received, with an estimated attendance of 150. Despite the high turnout, wine sales were low. Arts Administrator Gilliam suggested that this may have been due to inconvenient bar placement. Commissioner Tanha reported that she was very pleased with the caliber of entertainment at the event. The next event in rd the ‘Passport’ series will be ‘Passport to France’on Saturday, July 23. 8E. Commission Sponsored and Co-sponsored Events. Arts Administrator Gilliam reported the ‘Wednesdays@Noon’ concert series continues to experience high attendance of 160+ people each week.The next ‘Music by the Sea’ concert will be on May 20, and will feature a flute and harp duo. As Arts Administrator Gilliam will be travelling in Spain during 2016 05-02 Commission for the Arts Meeting Minutes 2of 3 this time, Arts Program Assistant Ehlers will manage the event with several volunteers. The Arts Division will hosta photography exhibit, entitled,Oh, What a Wonderful World!, at the Encinitas Community Center. This exhibit will feature photography by the San Dieguito Academy students in a celebration of nature and its beauty. 9.FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS Standing Reports Update on the FY2016-17 Work Plan iPalpiti Festival update 10.COMMISSIONERS’REPORTS Commissioner Filsinger reported that the San Diego Filmmakers are entering a new partnership th with ArcLight Cinemas. This will be announced at a May 10presentation at ArcLight UTC. The president of the Casting Society of America will also be speaking at this event. There is also an upcoming initiative for creation of a San Diego Women’s Film Network in order to advocate for greater participation by women in the film industry. San DiegoFilmmakers will be a community th partner in the upcoming 9annual Film in California Conference. Commissioner Tanha reported that she will be participating in the San Dieguito Mother’s Day Garden Show.She discussed the possibility ofusing nurseries as venues for art displays or events, as theCommission has recently been exploring innovative ways to present art to the community. Commissioner Meyersreported that she will be travelling to Chicago later in May for The Collaboratory, a conference for young Jewish leaders. Jerusalem-based dance group c.a.t.a.m.o.n. andJewish culinary group The Gefilteria will both be visiting in June. Commissioner Sabeck reported that her art exhibit, ‘Luminous’, has come down from the Oceanside Museum of Art. Commissioner Thumreported that the Encinitas Pops Concert went very well. The May 1 event featured the Coastal Communities Concert Band and top North County high school musicians.
