Meeting was called to order by Vice-Chair Lueker at 5:07 p.m.

4. APPROVAL OF THE APRIL 1. 2013 MEETING MINUTES

Arts Administrator Gilliam reviewed the FY2013/14 Commission Work Plan. Discussion ensued.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE MADE UP OF FIVE MEMBERS, THAT WOULD: 1) DEVELOP

B. 2013 Holiday Art Sale
Arts Administrator Gilliam reviewed the results from the 2012 Holiday Art Sale which was
initially developed to showcase local artists. He indicated that the Art Guild would be holding a
Holiday Art Sale at the Community Center this year.
ACTION:
COMMISSIONERS GUTHRIE MOVED AND TANHA SECONDED TO NOT HOST AN ART
SHOW IN 2013, RATHER TO HELP PROMOTE HOLIDAY ARTS SALES OCCURRING IN
THE COMMUNITY. MOTION CARRIED: AYES: COLVIN, GUTHRIE, LUEKER. SCHEIWE,
AND TANHA: NAYS: NONE: ABSENT: THUM: ABSTAIN: NONE.
C. Proposed Visual Art and Floral Installation Event
Arts Administrator Gilliam presented photos of the San Diego Museum of Art Arts Alive event as
examples of what the commission could potentially do in the community room at the library for
the visual art and Floral installation event.
Gilliam indicated that the Visual Art ad hoc committee met last week and decided that the
commission should proceed with planning the event for 2014. The event would be held initially
as a fundraiser for private viewing, then opened up to the public. Discussion ensued on
potential collaborations, ideas, partnering, artist solicitation and selection.

THE ART IN BLOOM PROJECT/FLORAL INSTALLATION EVENT IN 2014 AS A

D. Ad Hoc Committee Report: Phase 1. Painting Downtown SDG&E Utility Boxes, DEMA
Arts Administrator Gilliam reported on the Downtown Encinitas Mainstreet Association's
(DEMA) phase one of the SDG&E utility boxes painting project. The Commission for the Arts
Visual Art ad hoc committee participated in the artist selection process with DEMA to identify
and select the art designs to be painted on the SDG&E utility boxes located on Highway 101 and
E Streets.
ACTION:

SELECTED ARTIST FOR PHASE ONE OF THE SDG&E UTILITY BOXES PROTECT.

6. NEW BUSINESS
A. 2013 iPalpiti Festival of International Laureates
Arts Administrator Gilliam reported on the upcoming 2013 iPalpiti Festival of International
Laureates. Five soloists will perform in four concerts. There will be an additional concert
in Aliso Viejo with the full orchestra. The City is selling tickets for$55 which includes the
four concerts in Encinitas, and transportation and admission to the concert event in Aliso
Viejo.
B. 2013 Beverly Hills Auditions
Arts Administrator Gilliam reported that in April he attended the 2013 Beverly Hills auditions.
Out of those auditions ten musicians were selected to perform for the City.
C. Commissioner Training, Thursday, May 23. 6:00-8:30pm
Arts Administrator Gilliam reminded the commissioners about the training taking place on
Thursday, May 23, 2013 in the Poinsettia Room.
D. Commissioner Recruitment
Arts Administrator Gilliam reported Ron Lemen was unable to continue serving on the
Commission for the Arts. The City is currently recruiting to fill the vacancy.
E. Commission-Sponsored/Co-sponsored Events at Encinitas Library
Arts Administrator Gilliam reported on the Commission-sponsored/co-sponsored events at
the library, highlighting:
1) Wednesdays @Noon concerts, May 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
2) Opening Reception, Letty Nowak, Sat. May 3, 6-8pm
3) Concert: Christopher Goodpasture, Friday, May 10, 7:30pm
F. Encinitas Arts & Events Calendar, May 2013
Arts Administrator Gilliam reported on the May 2013 Encinitas Arts & Events calendar.
7. AGENDA ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETING

8. REPORTS FROM COMMISSION AND STAFF
Commissioner Scheiwe reported that he attended the street fair.

Commissioner Tanha reported that the Synergy fundraiser at Feeding America was a lot of work
but very successful.
Commissioner Colvin reported on the recent L Street Gallery opening. She also reported that
bids on Artists' Colony Arts Alive Banner auction were going well. Lastly, Colvin reported that
the Kids College is in need of art instructors and a local coordinator.
Vice-Chair Lueker reported that he has been working at Paul Ecke Central on a coral reef mosaic
as part of the Kids College community city grant co-sponsored project. He also reported that he
would be participating in next month's commission meeting via telephone from Hawaii.
