Monday, January 9, 2012
1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
Meeting was called to order by Chair Heisler at 5:04 p.m.
PRESENT: Chair Heisler, Commissioners Crawford, DiBenedetto,
Lemen, Lueker, Schmid and Thum
ABSENT: None
ALSO PRESENT: Arts Administrator Gilliam, Brandi Lewis for Commission
Secretary Zenns
2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
Chair Heisler led the Pledge of Allegiance.
3. ORAL COMMUNICATION
None.
4. APPROVAL OF DECEMBER 5, 2011 MEETING MINUTES
ACTION:
COMMISSIONERS THUM MOVED AND LUEKER SECONDED TO APPROVE THE
MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF DECEMBER 5, 2011. MOTION CARRIED:
AYES: CRAWFORD, DIBENEDETTO, HEISLER, LEMEN, LUEKER, SCHMID AND
THUM: NAYS: NONE: ABSENT: NONE: ABSTAIN: NONE.
5. NEW BUSINESS
A. City Council Goal Setting, 2012
Arts Administrator Gilliam provided a report on the City Council Goal Setting process. He
noted there was no Council Goal Setting Meeting scheduled for 2012. Committee
discussion, ensued regarding the city's two-year budget cycle in conjunction with the
Commission Work Plan.
6. OLD BUSINESS
A. General Plan Update
Arts Administrator Gilliam distributed copies of the arts content in the Draft General Plan.

Planner Mike Strong made a presentation on the comprehensive General Plan Update.
He reviewed the public review process, public meeting schedule and discussed examples
of other elements featured in the Draft General Plan. Planner Strong noted that
comments can be directed to the online comment board of the website:
www.encinitas2035.info.
Ruben Flores a resident in New Encinitas commented on the General Plan and expressed
support for public art in Encinitas.
Discussion ensued.
B. Ad Hoc Committee Report, Arts Education
Arts Administrator Gilliam reported on the arts education workshop held on Saturday,
January 7, 2012 with Jerm Wright.
Commissioner DiBenedetto reported on the progress of the poetry workshop. She
indicated Trish Dugger and the Full Moon Poets were willing to participate.
C. Ad Hoc Committee Report, Dance
Commissioner Schmid reported she performed at the Encinitas Holiday Bazaar. She met
with Sally Foster, Dean at Mira Costa College regarding use of Performing Arts Studios A
and B and the amphitheater for possible dance performances. Committee discussion
ensued regarding the scope and opportunities for future performances.
D. Commission Sponsored/Co-sponsored Events at Encinitas Library
1) Arts Education Workshop, Jerm Wright, Jan. 7, 9:30-11:30am
2) Wednesdays @Noon concerts, Jan. 4, 11, 18, 25
3) Recital Series Concert, Sunday, Jan. 15, 2:00 pm
4) Play: Secrets and Lies, San Diego Actors who Write, Jan. 16, 6:00pm
Arts Administrator Gilliam presented upcoming Commission Sponsored/co-sponsored
events at the Encinitas Library.
E. Encinitas Arts & Events Calendar, January, 2012
Arts Administrator Gilliam presented the January 2012 Encinitas Arts & Events Calendar.
7. AGENDA ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETING
1. General Plan Update —Ad hoc report on survey of arts content from other cities.
2. Arts Education report: Poetry workshop. Possible April workshop in conjunction
with the Full Moon Poets.
3. Presentation and report from Commissioner Lemen:
a) Arts Festival - Public Mural
b) Action Sports Festival

8. REPORTS FROM COMMISSION AND STAFF
Commissioner Lueker reported that he traveled for the holidays.
Commissioner Crawford reported on the DEMA Wellness Festival coming up in January.
Commissioner DiBenedetto reported that she attended a reading of A Christmas Carol by
Intrepid Shakespeare Company and shared information about their upcoming season.
Commissioner Lemon reported he has DVD's coming out next month. He also reported
on workshops in Kansas City and New York and stated he would be doing additional
webinars at the Encinitas Library.
9. ADJOURNMENT
Chair Heisler adjourned the meeting at 6:43 p.m.
