1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
Meeting was called to order by Vice-Chair Thum at 5:05 p.m.
PRESENT: Vice-Chair Thum, Commissioners Cope, DiBenedetto, Tucker and
Zimdars
ABSENT: Chair Buxbaum and Commissioner Lemen
ALSO PRESENT: Commission Secretary Zenns
2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
Vice-Chair Thum led the Pledge of Allegiance.
3. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Rene Rosman spoke about the San Dieguito Art Guild's upcoming reception to celebrate the 45th
year of its inception. The reception will take on Saturday, June 19`". She also indicated that the
Off Track Gallery had secured a permanent location in the Lumberyard.
4. APPROVAL OF MAY 3. 2010 MEETING MINUTES
ACTION:
COMMISSIONERS COPE MOVED AND ZIMDARS SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES
OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF MAY 3, 2010. MOTION CARRIED: AYES: COPE,
DiBENEDETTO, THUM, TUCKER AND ZIMDARS; NAYS: NONE; ABSENT: BUXBAUM,
LEMEN; ABSTAIN: NONE.
5. OLD BUSINESS
A. 2009/10 Arts Work Plan Reports:
I. Advocacy: Commissioners Buxbaum (Chair) and Thum
Vice-Chair Thum reported that she attended a meeting with the San Dieguito Union School District
regarding community partnerships for arts education within the district.

II. Arts Education: Commissioners Zimdars (Chair) and Thum
Commissioner Zimdars reported on the Skateboard Art Workshop planned for June 19, 2010 with
Ron Cameron in the Community Room at the Encinitas Library. Also, a two-day Visual Art
Workshop, Leam How to Make a Mosaic, with Tim Lueker would take place in the City Hall
Poinsettia Room on June 23 and 24th. Both events would be free.
III. Arts Venues
Commissioner DiBenedetto reported that she had met with Arts Administrator Gilliam regarding
the Town Center site wherein they discussed considerations for a Farmer's Market/Arts Festival
with live music and vendors. She also attended the Open Mic Night at the Encinitas Library.
IV. Performing Arts: Commissioners Thum (Chair) and Buxbaum
Vice-Chair Thum reported on the various upcoming events provided through the Arts
programming.
V. Visual Art (Commissioners Lemen (Chair) and Tucker
Commissioner Tucker reported that Lemen has done a wonderful job promoting art walk at the
Downtown Encinitas Mainstreet Association. She also indicated that environmental themed
banners have been installed along Coast Hwy 101.
VI. Encinitas Friends of the Arts (Commissioners Zimdars (Chair), Cope, and Thum
Commissioner Zimdars reported that the Friends of the Arts flyers were made available at the last
art workshop at the Encinitas Library and several community members signed up. Commissioner
Cope indicated that she would work with Arts Administrator Gilliam to reformat the letter into a
brochure.
6. NEW BUSINESS
A. 2009110 Work Plan Evaluation and 2010111 Work Plan Development (Arts Goals)
A goal setting and work plan would be developed during the July 12, 2010 Commission for the
Arts meeting.
B. Proposal for a Temporary Installation of Public Art, Green Spring Flower Thing
Vice-Chair Thum reported on the Green Spring Flower Thing temporary art installation project that
would be heard by Council at an upcoming City Council Meeting. Discussion ensued.
ACTION:
COMMISSIONERS COPE MOVED AND TUCKER SECONDED TO APPROVE THE
PROPOSAL FOR A TEMPORARY INSTALLATION OF PUBLIC ART ENTITLED THE GREEN
SPRING FLOWER THING AND TO FORWARD THE COMMISSION FOR THE ARTS'
RECOMMENDATION TO THE CITY COUNCIL. MOTION CARRIED: AYES: COPE,
DiBENEDETTO, THUM, TUCKER AND ZIMDARS; NAYS: NONE: ABSENT: BUXBAUM,
LEMEN: ABSTAIN: NONE.

C. Artist Gazebos in the Parks. Commissioner DiBenedetto
Commissioner DiBenedetto provided a report on the potential for artist gazebos in the city parks.
Her vision is to have gazebos installed in City parks as a site for artists to hold not-for-profit
events, lectures, etc. Commissioner DiBenedetto would bring additional information before the
Commission during the goal setting workshop.
D. Arts Party, Commissioner Cope
Commissioner Cope reported on the idea of an arts party (art show) in Encinitas. Discussion
ensued.
ACTION:
COMMISSIONERS TUCKER MOVED AND ZIMDARS SECONDED TO SUPPORT THE IDEA
OF AN ARTS PARTY AND TO AGENDIZE THE ITEM FOR THE NEXT MEETING FOR
FURTHER DISCUSSION. MOTION CARRIED: AYES: COPE, DiBENEDETTO, THUM,
TUCKER AND ZIMDARS; NAYS: NONE; ABSENT: BUXBAUM, LEMEN; ABSTAIN: NONE.
E. Encinitas Arts & Events Calendar for June, 2010
Vice-Chair Thum reported on the Arts and Events calendar for June, 2010.

8. OPEN DISCUSSION
Commissioner Cope indicated that she visited Grand Junction, Colorado and was impressed with
their public art program.
Vice-Chair Thum reported on the upcoming Playwright's Forum, the Story of Henrietta Lacks, by
Judy Montague to be held Monday June 21, 2010 at the Community Room at the Encinitas
Library.
9. ADJOURNMENT
Vice-Chair Thum adjourned the meeting at 6:08 P.M.
