2011-04-06 CITY OF ENCINITAS YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES: April 6, 2011, 4:30 PM 1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL Chairperson Haller called the meeting to order at 4:35 PM Present: Chairperson Haller, Vice Chairperson Ferreirae, Commissioners Barth, Conger, Dempster, Eyl, Maskiewicz, Marow, Morales, Lawson, and Sands Also Present: Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein and Program Assistant Roff Absent: Commissioner Lawson 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Commissioner Marow led the pledge. 3. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None 4. CHANGES TO THE AGENDA None 5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF THE CONSENT CALENDAR Approval of the Minutes for the March 2, 2011 Regular Meeting. COMMISSIONER MAROW MOVED COMMISSIONER MASKIEWICZ SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE MARCH 2, 2011 MEETING. MOTION CARRIED 10-0 (COMMISSIONER LAWSON ABSENT). 6. PRESENTATIONS None 7. OLD BUSINESS None 8. NEW BUSINESS A. Discussion on Teen Tobacco Use Chair Haller requested Commissioners provide comments on the March presentation on Teen Tobacco Use and Licensing of Tobacco Retailers. Commissioners discussed the presentation and unanimously agreed this is a matter for City Council. B. Discussion on CPR Training for Commissioners Commissioners discussed participating in a CPR Training Course and unanimously decided to arrange individual CPR training. Staff will provide the Commission with possible training dates. 9. AD HOC SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS A. Subcommittee Reports Recycling (Commissioners Barth, Conger and Lawson)  Commissioner Barth reported the PowerPoint presentation would be presented at the May 4, 2011 meeting. Homeless Teens (Commissioners Eyl, Dempster, Morales, Sands and Lawson)  Commissioner Eyl reported the subcommittee, Commission Chair and staff would arrange a meeting with the Community Resource Center. Environment (Commissioners Conger, Barth and Haller)  Chair Haller reported the subcommittee has decided to promote the May 21 and July 16 Surfrider Foundation Moonlight Beach Clean-ups. Commissioners agreed to promoting these events and to participating as community members. B. Other Representative Reports CGPU (Commissioner Marow)  Commissioner Marow reported the next meeting would be to discuss the information received at the Community Wide Workshop. 10. COMMISSIONER’S CORNER Commissioner Conger reported on the Literacy Week at Diegueno. Commissioner Morales reported on Spring Sing at St. John’s. Commissioner Lawson reported on spring sports tryouts and MORP at LCC. Commissioner Barth reported on the first music event held at the Nest Café at CCA. Commissioner Dempster reported on the academic field trip and talent show at Diegueno. Commissioner Maskiewicz reported on the talent show and academic field trip at Oakcrest. Commissioner Sands reported SDA is hosting exchange students from Japan. Commissioner Eyl reported the Journalism Club toured the LA Times and Eighth Grade Graduation plans are underway at St. John’s. Commissioner Marow reported on the Talent Show at SDA. Vice Chair Ferreirae reported the SDA Robotics Team made the National Finals and requested a Commissioner replace him as a MC for the Intergenerational Recital as he is unavailable. Chair Haller asked Commissioners for input on guest presenters for the May meeting. SD Explorers and someone to speak on the process of City Government were suggested. Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein provided flyers on teen programs and reminded Commissioners Applications for next year are due by March 26, 2011. 11.
