2010-09-21 CITY OF ENCINITAS SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION MINUTES Meeting Date September 21, 2010 2:00 PM 1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL The meeting was called to order at 2:02 PM Present: Chair Finch, Vice-Chair Campbell, Commissioners Harp, Vance and VanHoughton Also Present: Senior Center Manager Goodsell and Program Assistant Roff Absent: Commissioner Pollack 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Commissioner Drielsma led the Pledge of Allegiance. 3. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None 4. CHANGES TO AGENDA Chair Finch requested correcting Commissioner names Pollack to Finch on the Outreach Subcommittee and correcting Commissioner names Finch to Pollack on the Special Events Subcommittee. 5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF THE CONSENT CALENDAR A. Approval of Minutes for the Regular Meeting June 15, 2010 VICE-CHAIR CAMPBELL MOTIONED, COMMISSIONER VANHOUGHTON SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES. MINUTES WERE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED 5-0 (COMMISSIONER POLLACK ABSENT). 6. PRESENTATIONS None 7. OLD BUSINESS A. Review of the June 15 Tour Commissioners found the tour beneficial, were impressed with the leadership, facility, and specifically commented on the gymnasium. B. Status Report on the Senior Center Senior Center Manager Goodsell reported on new classes at the Senior Center and a donation from Newcomers III Club of San Dieguito. C. Update Report on Ad Hoc Subcommittees and Representative Reports Outreach (Commissioners Campbell, Harp and Finch)  3 Vice-Chair Campbell reported on the Focus Group Report and recommended additional research before the Commission makes a recommendation to Council. Commissioners discussed the purpose and goals of the focus group. Commissioners reached agreement to present the findings of the Focus Group Report to Council on November 10, 2010. The subcommittee plans to meet prior to the November 10 Council meeting. Special Events (Commissioner Drielsma, Pollack and VanHoughton)  Commissioner Drielsma thanked Senior Center Manager Goodsell for the Spaghetti Dinner update. Senior Center Manager Goodsell thanked Commissioners for their involvement in recruiting sponsors and raffle prizes. Commissioners commented on the success of the event, the delicious dinner and enjoyable entertainment. Senior Center Manager Goodsell reported funds are used to help supplement the Senior Nutrition Program. Commissioners suggested servers begin at one end of the room and move to the next to improve overall dinner service. The subcommittee plans to meet in late October in preparation for the Encinitas Holiday Parade. Representative Reports  Council Update- Chair Finch reported attending the Mayor’s Breakfast o where the Chair and Vice-Chair of each Commission have a chance to meet with the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and staff. Comprehensive General Plan Update Steering Committee- Commissioner o Vance updated Commissioners on the Committees discussion of senior housing needs in Encinitas and encourage Commissioners to keep updated at www.Encinitas2035.info. The next public workshop is scheduled for November 16, 2010 at the Encinitas Community and Senior Center. Encinitas Senior Foundation- Commissioner Harp reported the Senior o Foundation’s final board meeting will be September 29, 2010 and the Foundation gave a recent $5,000 donation to the Senior Center Out and About program. The Encinitas Senior Foundation has donated over $120,000 in cash and equipment to the Encinitas Senior Center. 8. NEW BUSINESS A. Senior Directory Inclusion Request Senior Center Manager Goodsell reported Home Care Assistance has requested publication in the next Senior Directory. Commissioners discussed the request, Chair Finch motioned, Vice-Chair Campbell seconded, and motion was unanimous, 5-0 for including Home Care Assistance in the next Senior Directory. 9. COMMISSIONER’S CORNER/ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Commissioners Commissioner VanHoughton reported attending community events to gather  information to bring back to the Commission. Commissioner Harp reported the timely receipt of Puppy training classes, as he  has a new Border Collie puppy. Commissioner Drielsma reported attending the Council Candidate forum at Ada  Harris School in Cardiff and encouraged all Commissioners to attend an upcoming forum. 4 Vice-Chair Campbell reported a Council Candidate Forum will be held Thursday  10 AM, October 7, at Belmont Village. Chair Finch reminded Commissioners of the September 28 Commissioner  Appreciation Dinner beginning at 5:30 PM at the Encinitas Library and requested all Commissioners provide an email address for correspondence.
