2010-05-18 CITY OF ENCINITAS SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION MINUTES Meeting Date: May 18 2010, 2:00 PM 1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL The meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m. Present: Chairperson Finch, Vice-Chairperson Campbell, Commissioners Drielsma, Harp, Pollack and Vance Absent: None Also Present: Senior Center Manager Goodsell and Program Assistant Roff 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Pledge of Allegiance led by Commissioner Drielsma 3. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None 4. CHANGES TO AGENDA None 5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF THE CONSENT CALENDAR A. Approval of Minutes for the regular meeting April 20, 2010 COMMISSIONER HARP MOVED, COMMISSIONER CAMPBELL SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE APRIL 20, 2010 MEETING. CHAIR FINCH REQUESTED A CORRECTING TO THE MINUTES, ITEM 7B, CORRECTING AL REDSUN’S TITLE TO FORMER PRESIDENT. MOTION CARRIED 4-0. (COMMISSIONERS VANCE, AND POLLACK WERE NOT PRESENT). 6. PRESENTATION None 7. OLD BUSINESS A. Off-Site Tour and Lunch at the Carlsbad Senior Center Senior Center Manager Goodsell reported the Commission will meet at 10:45 AM in the Council Chambers, from there the Commission will depart for the Carlsbad Senior Center where a tour and lunch will be provided. B. Status Report on the Senior Center 3 Senior Center Manager Goodsell reported online registration is being promoted to avoid a lengthy registration process at the Senior Center. June 16 at 10:30 AM, the Senior Center will hold a presentation on Medicare help and provided Commissioners the updated Senior Services Directory. C. 2010 Senior Information Fair Review Chair Finch, Vice-Chair Campbell and Commissioner Drielsma reported the Fair ran smoothly. Commissioner Vance inquired if attendance was taken. Senior Center Manager suggested counting the bags that were left for an estimated attendance total. Commissioner Harp reported no surprises came out of the survey. Vice-Chair Campbell reported 58 incoming surveys and 19 exit surveys were completed and provided an oral report on the findings. Commissioner Harp commented on vendors giving out candy. Chair Finch reported the food provided was good and the first three hours had a steady flow of visitors. D. Update Report on Ad Hoc Subcommittees Outreach  Vice-Chair Campbell said the next Focus Group will be June 29 at Belmont Village and the subcommittee plans to meet again before the June 29 meeting in preparation for it. Special Events/Senior Information Fair  Commissioner Drielsma reported the subcommittee will not meet until after the appointment of a new commissioner. Representative Reports Council Update-  No report Comprehensive General Plan Update Steering Committee-  Commissioner Vance provided a comprehensive oral report on the results of the citywide workshop held May 1, 2010. Senior Foundation  Commissioner Harp reported the Foundation is continuing to move forward with closure and plans to disband in the next two months. 8. NEW BUSINESS A. Recruitment for Senior Citizen Commission Vacancy Senior Center Manager Goodsell reported one vacancy on the Commission and May 27 at 6:00 PM is the application deadline. Presentations will be made to Council on June 9, and June 23 Council will make an appointment. 9. COMMISSIONER’S CORNER/ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Commissioners Commissioner Vance commented his son continues to be the story line  interest of Hollywood. 4 Commissioner Harp commented on the terrific America Story of Us being  shown on Sundays at 9:00 PM. Commissioner Drielsma inquired if Commissioners knew what the white  busses are in Encinitas and SDUHS has a reading program for ESL learners. Chair Finch provided information on computers designed for seniors powered  by My Gate designed for easy use. B. Staff Senior Center Manager Goodsell reported July/August Prime Times will be sent via an email blast to senior program participants. Chair Finch requested IT provide information on which Commission suggestions will be implemented on the City website. 10.
