2009-05-04 MEETING MINUTES CITY OF ENCINITAS COMMISSION FOR THE ARTS Y Meeting Date: Monday, May 4, 2009 . 5:30 p.m. City Hall, Poinsettia Room 1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL Meeting was called.to order by Chair Gagliardo at 5:37 p.m. PRESENT: Chair Gagliardo, Commissioners Buxbaum, Cope, Lemen, Thum, Tucker, and Zimdars ABSENT: None ' ALSO PRESENT: Commission Secretary Zenns 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Chair Gagliardo led the Pledge of Allegiance: 3. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS Betsy O'Neill Aceti and Commissioner Cope sang the Encinitas song for the commissioners. 4. APPROVAL OF APRIL 13 2009 MEETING MINUTES : ACTION: ~ COMMISSIONERS B UXBAUM MOVED AND THUM SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF APRIL 13 2009. MOTION CARRIED: AYES: BUXBAUM COPE GAGLIARDO LEMEN THUM TUCKER AND ZIMDARS• NAYS: NONE• ABSENT: NONE• ABSTAIN: NONE. 5. OLD BUSINESS A. Report: An Update on the Strategic Priorities 2009 Goals 1. Advocacv (Lead• Commissioner Zimdarsl: No report. II. Arts Education (Lead: Commissioner Buxbaum): Commissioner Buxbaum reported that she tabulated the offerings of art education in the community. A meeting would be scheduled with Arts Administrator Gilliam. III. Performinq Arts (Lead• Commissioner Thum): Commissioner Thum reported that a meeting would be scheduled with Arts Administrator Gilliam. Commissioner Zimdars indicated that a meeting to discuss events at the library was set for Thursday May 14, IV. , Visual Art (Lead• Commissioner Tucker): Commissioner Tucker reported that DEMA had its first gallery opening on Saturday, May 2; 2009. Also, a downtown Encinitas art stroll would take place during the summer months on Wednesday evenings. Public Art (Lead Chair Gaqliardo): Chair Gagliardo reported that a calendar concept would not be initiated by the City. VL Arts Venues (Lead• C)mmissioner Cope): No report. 6. NEW BUSINESS A. Appoint a Commission Member to serve on the Community Grant Program Evaluation Panel Commissioner Buxbaum volunteered to participate in the Community Grant Program evaluation process. Ad Hoc Committee Report: Public Art Tour on Hwy. 101, Summer, 2009 in partnership with the San Diego Fine Art Society Chair Gagliardo provided an update on the discussions with April Game of the San Diego Fine Art Society. The Society intended to move forward with the temporary art installation project without funding secured. There were nine or ten artists committed to the event. Chair Gagliardo had hoped that Ms. Game would be present at tonight's meeting. The San Diego Fine Art Society would pay for installation and carry liability insurance for the artwork. The exhibit would coincide with the Coast Cruiser Project scheduled for the summer. a. Report: Encinitas Photography Contest, Commissioner Cope Commissioner Cope provided an update on the Encinitas Photography Contest and proposed that the Commission for the Arts sponsor the event and hold it along with another community event. OPEN DISCUSSION , Commissioner Zimdars indicated that she would attend the Lux @ Night event on May 2pt". She expressed her goal to have each of the art institutes working together to coordinate activities. Commissioner Cope indicated that KOCT would run Bob Naninga's "On the Edge" series. She also reported that there was interest in having a Hugh Martin night in the Community Room at the Library to serve as a potential fundraiser for a new piano for the library. Commissioner Thum reported that the "Trumpets or Us" music series was recently held in the Community Room at the Library. Also, she indicted that the Coastal Communities Concert Band would perform their Spring Concert on May 17, 2009. 8. DISCUSSION OF AGENDA ITEMS FOR FUTURE MEETINGS 4. Funding for public art project(s) - Determine FY08/09 funding availability and allocafions. 2. Funding of the Encinitas Photography Contest (Commissioner Cope). 9.
