1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
Meeting was called to order by Chair Gagliardo at 5:37 p.m.
PRESENT: Chair Gagliardo, Commissioners Buxbaum, Folescu, Lemen, Thum,
Tucker, and van Haitsma

ALSO PRESENT: Arts Administrator Gilliam, Commission Secretary Zenns

4. APPROVAL OF DECEMBER 1, 2008 MEETING MINUTES
ACTION:

Commissioner Tucker reported that the ad hoc committee met to schedule the Civic Art Program
Exhibitions for the upcoming year.

6. NEW BUSINESS
A. Ad Hoc Committee Report: Temporarv Installation Proaram on Hwv. 101,
Summer, 2009 in partnership with the San Dieqo Fine Art Societv
Staff Recommendation: Receive Report, Approve Recommendation
Chair Gagliardo reported that a meeting was held to discuss a temporary art instaUation program
with April Game of the San Diego Fine Art Society. During the meeting, it was decided that the
focus would be placed on coordinating a project with the summer shuttle pilot project. The shuttle
is scheduled to run from Memorial Day through Labor Day during the weekends. The key to
making this project work is to find sponsorships for the art.
Chair Gagliardo indicated that he would bring this item up during Council's Goal Setting workshop.
B. Community Grant Program funded projects for January 2009
■ Exhibit: Academy of Fine Art, Russia, presented by Studio 2nd Street, Jan: - Feb. 2009,
Encinitas Library Community Room, 540 Cornish Drive, Free
Commissioner Lemen reported that the Russian Show would be installed this week. He also
indicated that a brochure was being developed. The reception would take place in the evening of
January 31 st.

■ Lux @ Night (open house), Wednesday, Jan. 21, 7:00pm, Lux Art institute, 1550 South EI

Arts Administrator Gilliam indicated that he recently met with Reesey Shaw with the Lux Art
Institute.
■ Family Concert Series, Hutchins Consort, Saturday, Jan. 10, 10:00-11:15am, Encinitas Library
Community Room, 540 Cornish Drive, Free
Arts Administrator Gilliam indicated that the Hutchins Consort held a rehearsal in the Library
Community Room this morning and would be holding a free concert this weekend.
7. OPEN DISCUSSION
Commissioner Lemen indicated that a Chinese painter would be giving a free lesson at the
Community Room.
Commissioner Folescu discussed upcoming author events.

Commissioner Thum indicated that the Peter Sprague Trio is performing for the Library's First
Sunday Concert Series in February. She also reported that she had, during the last Friend's of the
Library meeting, proposed that the Friends dedicate funds for audio=visual needs in the Community
Room.
Arts Administrator Gilliam indicated that the selection committee met to develop the civic art
program for 2009. There will be approximately more than 40 exhibits in City Hall and the Library.
He also reported that Moxie gave $500 to the Readers' Theater Program.
