PRESENT: Council Member Dalager, Arts Administrator Gilliam, Peder Norby, Dody Tucker, Carris Rhodes, Julian Duval, Grace Swanson, John McIsaac, Paul Davis, Joe Koch, Judy Montague, Paula Kirpilani, Grace Madamba, Alketa Wojcik, Sid Shaw, Sheila Dirken, Mike Andreen, Pat Reinhardt, Kathy Weldon and Committee Secretary Lewis. CALL TO ORDER - INTRODUCTIONS Council Member Dalager called the meeting to order at 8:07 a.m. Self-introductions were made. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - FEBRUARY 5, 2009 MEETING Committee consensus to approve the minutes of the February 5, 2009 meeting. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. REGULAR AGENDA 1. PRESENTATION ON PACIFIC STATION BEACH NOURISHMENT PROJECT - K. WELDON Kathy Weldon with the City of Encinitas Engineering Department gave a presentation on the history and overview of the beach nourishment project, which placed approximately 37,000 cubic yards of sand on Encinitas beaches. The process was started approximately five years ago and was the first public-private opporiunistic sand project done in Encinitas. John DeWald with Pacific Station and Tom Brown from Sierra Pacific West partnered with the city to help coordinate the project. 03-05-09_Cultural Tourism_Meeting Minutes.doc ~ 2. INFORMATION SHARING - ALL Judy Montague with the Bncinitas Theater Consortium introduced herself to the group and described her background and experience with arts and theater. She discussed her idea to hold a Mary Pickford Film Festival and announced that Encinitas has been selected as one of the cities on the National tour of the National Library of Congress silent film festival for Mary Pickford, in honor of her l 00th birthday. Discussion ensued regarding the film festival and the La Palorna Theater. Peder Norby announced that they would be giving an update on the Coast Cruiser at the March 11, 2009 City Council Meeting. Dody Tucker with DEMA reported that she attended the Mainstreet conference in Chicago. Carris Rhodes with DEMA reported that they would no longer be doing the DEMA Mainstreet Mornings and would instead have an evening mixer event. She also announced the Encinitas Street Fair was coming up on Apri125 and 26, 2009. Julian Duval with Quail Botanical Gardens distributed handouts and discussed several events taking place at Quail Gardens. Julian announced they received a grant from Cal Fire and would be expanding their fire safe gardens. He reported on the progress of the Children's Garden, with tentative opening day on Saturday, June 13, 2009. Grace Swanson with Off Track Gallery displayed samples of the work by Roy Soravia and stated they were beginning to sell his work. Paul Davis distributed handouts for the upcoming Rotary Wine Festival happening at Quail Gardens on June 6, 2009. . Arts Administrator Gilliam distributed postcards for the Pat Rincon Dance Collective and announced they I would be performing this Friday and Saturday night in the Encinitas Library Community Room. Also taking place in the community room were free concerts on the first Sunday of each month at 2:00 p.m., free concerts featuring the Hutchins Consort on the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m., and ticketed opera recitals on the third Sunday of the month at 2:30 p.m. Jim discussed the artists, Cheryl Sorg and Jan Thompson, who were currently on display in the library community room and at the civic center. Jim Gilliam also announced a call for musicians by the Del Mar Fair. They were looking for 50 Encinitas musicians whose images would be placed on banners for display starting in July and asked that information regarding musicians be forwarded to him. Dan Dalager reported that he would attend the San Dieguito High School Robot Rumble event on Saturday, which was funded in part by a City CGP Grant with matching funds from with Mizel Family Foundation. Dan showed the group a antique branding iron which was found during excavation in Cardiff. Paula Kirpilani with Leucadia 101 provided an update on the Coast Cruiser. There would be a presentation to the City Council on March 11, 2009. Graphics have been done and three anchor sponsors have been secured. 03-05-09 Cultural Tourism Meeting Minutes.doc Grace Madamba with the Lux Art Institute announced that Jolynn Krystosek was currently on display. The next Lux at Night would be on March 18, 2009. The next Artist in Residence would be Victoria Adams, whose residency would begin on March 26, 2009. On April 18, Lux was planning to host a designer sale to raise money for their education program. The Lux would accept donated designer items through April. Alketa Wojcik with Mira Costa College reported that campus enrollment was up approximately 16% this semester. The LIFE - Learning is for Everyone, program takes place every Friday at 1:00 p.m. She also reported that Mira Costa would be doing a Kids at College program which brings 200 third graders to take classes at college. Sheila Dirken with the San Dieguito Academy Foundation discussed some of the alumni projects taking place and announced they were video taping alumni for the video history project. She reported on their active community and internship program which places students at various positions in Encinitas. Career day was scheduled for Wednesday, March 18, 2009. Sheila provided an update on the San Dieguito Visual and Performing Arts Center and stated they were hoping to break ground this summer. Mike Andreen representing the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce announced the March Sundowner would be at Brett's BBQ on Tuesday, March 17, 2009. Mike Andreen displayed a copy of the Encinitas Chamber publication and stated that information could be submitted via email to encintiasfirst(agmail.com prior to the 15`h of each month. There would be a fundraiser on behalf of Bob Nanninga on March 12, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. The Encinitas chamber would have their awards and recognition dinner on April 18, 2009.
