PRESENT: Council Member Dalager, Council Member Barth, Arts Administrator Gilliam, Diana Shimkus, Evelyn Weidner, Pat Reinhardt, Angel Haag, Paul Davis, Charlie Marvin, Shari Fortmueller, Dody tucker, Teri Fazzio, Grace Madamba, Deborah Van Huis, John McIsaac, Reesey Shaw, Kathleen Lees, and Committee Secretary Lewis. CALL TO ORDER - INTRODUCTIONS Council Member Dalager called the meeting to order at: 8:02 a.m. Self-introductions were made. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - APRIL 2, 2009 MEETING One change was noted to the meeting minutes. Committee Consensus to approve the minutes as corrected from the Apri12, 2009 meeting. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS REGULAR AGENDA 1. UPDATE ON THE COAST CRUISER BEACH SHUTTLE BUS- D. TUCKERI C. RHODES Dody Tucker and Carris Rhodes with DEMA provided an update on the Coast Cruiser beach shuttle bus. The 12-seat, bio-diesel shuttle would begin services on Saturday, June 6 and would run from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. every weekend through Labor Day. There were 11 bus stops; four in Leucadia and three in Encinitas and in Cardiff. Weekend bus passes would be available for $5.00 or $1.00 per ride. They discussed the sponsors involved and other details about the pilot program. 2. UPDATE ON ENCINITAS ENVIRONMENT DAY 2009 AND THE , COTTONWOOD CREEK ENVIRONMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL- D. TUCKER/ C. RHODES Carris Rhodes with DEMA provided an update on the Cottonwood Creek Environmental Film Festival. Over 60 vendors were expected to participate. Rodney McCoubrey would be doing a Fish for Thought (1A_fld_flq ('nlhu-al Tnmicin Mvrtino Minntac (lnr , i workshop for children at the Library. Dadla Ponizil would be doing demonstrations on upgrading home ~ performance. There would be a recycled art exhibition at the Encinitas library and environmental films ~ featured at the Encinitas Library and at the La Paloma Theater. Tickets would be sold online and at DEMA offices. On Friday, June 5 there would be a VIP party at Lemongrass Salon in Encinitas. 3. PRESENTATION ON THE ENCINITAS MUSIC FESTIVAL FUND RAISER FOR MUSIC EDUCATION - G. LACKRITZ/D.SHIMKUS Diana Shimkus introduced herself to the committee and discussed the Encinitas Music Festival, a one day music festival to raise funding for music education. The event is planned for Saturday, May 15, 2010 at San Dieguito Academy. She discussed several possible participants and asked the committee for input regarding the event. 4. PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION ON THE ENCINITAS I,IMA BEAN , COOK-OFF FESTIVAL - E. WEIDNER Evelyn Weidner introduced herself to the committee and discussed the history of the lima bean in the community of Encinitas. The Lima Bean Festival would take place at the San Dieguito Heritage Museum on September 25, 26, and 27. An amateur talent show and tequila tasting would take place on Friday. The Lima Bean Cook-off and fashion show would happen on Saturday. The senior Lima Bean Follies and an old fashioned picnic would take place on Sunday. Evelyn stated they were looking for additional sponsors and that they hoped to establish the Lima Bean Festival as an annual event. INFORMATION SHARING I, Arts Administrator Gilliam reported on the De1 Mar Fair, Music Mania banners featuring Encinitas musicians which would be on display along Highway 101 through the end of July. Evelyn Weidner announced the Begonia Celebration taking place at Weidner's Gardens. Kathleen Lees with the Leucadia Town Council discussed the Leucadia North 101 streetscape planning and the launch of the Coast Cruiser. Pat Reinhardt with the Encinitas Chamber and Visitor Center announced that information and event flyers could be sent to the visitor center for distribution. Send items via email to: info e,encinitaschamber.com. Angel Haag, a new Executive Board Member with the Chamber of Commerce, introduced herself to the committee. She discussed staffing and hours at the Visitor Center. The 15th Annual Oktoberfest would be on Sunday, September 20, 2009. Paul Davis representing the Encinitas Rotary reported that the Rotary Wine Festival taking place at Quail Botanical Gardens on Saturday, June 6, was sold out. Peter Sprague would perform. Charlie Marvin with Leucadia Town Council reported on the Leucadia 101 Streetscape and stated there would be a fourth workshop to review traffic impacts on adjacent streets. He discussed AB 226 - MLPA (Marine Life Protection Areas) and encouraged the group to review the information and to raise awareness about the impact on our local beaches and coastal environment. (16_(ld_!19 ('„ttn,al Tnnricm Martino MinnYee Anr Council Member Teresa Barth provided an update on the MLPA/ AB226. She is following the progress through the SANDAG Coastal Cities Committee. Shari Fortmueller with the San Dieguito Heritage Museum provided an update on the activity at the Heritage Museum. Families Make History programs take place on the last Saturday of each Month from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. This month would feature a mural painting art exhibit and activity. Dody Tucker with DEMA reported that the Downtown Encinitas Summertime Art Stoll takes place on the first Wednesday of each month. Tuesday nights were now Downtown Date Night featuring prefix menus at many local restaurants downtown. Classic Car Cruise Nights would kick-off in June and take place on the third Thursday of each month through September. Teri Fazzio with the Encinitas Parks and Recreation department reported on several upcoming events: • The Intergenerational Recital at the Encinitas Community and Senior Center on Friday, June 5. • The Encinitas Pet Health Expo at City Hall, on Sunday, June 7. • A Day with Dad on the Trail at Las Verdes Park on June 20. • The Sth Annual Switchfoot Bro-Am at Moonlight Beach on June 27. • The Summer Sunday concert series at Moonlight Beach begins July 5. She also reported that the Encinitas Feeling Fit Festival was being planned for October 4, 2009 at Leo Mullen Sports Park. Grace Madamba with Lux Art Institute distributed postcards and flyers regarding upcoming events. Reesey Shaw with Lux Art Institute discussed the featured Artist in Residence, Derrick Guild. On Saturday, June 6, Lux Art Institute would be open free to the public and the next Lux at Night would be on Wednesday, June 17. Deborah Van Huis reported on the Off-Track Gallery Mother's Day Art and Garden tour. She announced that there would be an artist demonstration this afternoon on digital media and there would be artist receptions at the Off-Track Gallery on Friday, June 12 and Friday, July 10.
