2009-08-06 CITY OF ENCINITAS CULTURAL TOURISM COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Poinsettia Room, Civic Center 505 South Vulcan Avenue . PRESENT: Council Member Dalager, Council Member Barth, Arts Administrator Gilliam, Paula Kirpilani, Pat Reinhardt, Margo Oakley, Shari Fortmueller, Chuck Ades, Peder Norby, Deborah Van Huis, Kathleen Lees, Teri Fazzio, Julian Duval, Dody Tucker, Evelyn Weidner and Committee Secretary Lewis. CALL TO ORDER - INTRODUCTIONS Council Member Dalager called the meeting to order at 8:02 a.m. Self introductions were made. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - JUNE 4, 2009 MEETING Committee consensus to approve the minutes of the June 4, 2009 meeting. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. REGULAR AGENDA 1. DISCUSSION AND BRAINSTORMING REGARDING ENCINITAS DAY IDEAS - T. BARTH Council Member Barth initiated discussion regarding Encinitas Day. Teri Fazzio with the City of Encinitas Parks and Recreation Department discussed the history and evolution of Encinitas Day. She reported that Encinitas Day started as a low-key, low-cost, event but as the events grew and changed over the years, it morphed into several different events such as the Fall Festival Street Fair and the city sponsored, Feeling Fit Festival. Discussion ensued regarding ideas for future Encinitas Day events. 2. INFORMATION SHARING - ALL Evelyn Weidner and Margo Oakley discussed the Lima Bean Festival taking place on September 25, 26, and 27. They encouraged participation from the committee and stated volunteers and event sponsors were still needed. Shari Fortmueller with the San Dieguito Heritage Museum discussed ticket pricing for the Lima Bean Festival. She reported the cook-off was free to enter. Tasting tickets would be $5 for three tastes or $15 for all. Tickets for the picnic would cost $25, or $50 for a weekend pass. 08-06-09_Cultural Tourism_Meeting Minutes.doc Dody Tucker with DEMA reported that Taste of Mainstreet tickets were on sale. DEMA classic car night would be on Thursday, August 20. Dody discussed the Summer Art Stroll, Downtown Date Night and the new DEMA website, www.Encinitas101.com. Deborah Van Huis with the Off-Track Gallery discussed the opening of their second location, Off Track 2, in the Encinitas Lumberyard shopping center. She announced there would be a reception on Saturday, August 29, from 5 pm. to 8 p.m. Peder Norby, the Encinitas Highway 101 Coordinator, spoke on behalf of the Gardiff Chamber. He cliscussed the Rob Machado Surf Classic taking place at Cardiff Seaside Beach on September 26 and 27. The Green Expo would be partnered with this event. The Cardiff Chamber would be hosting the fourth annual Dog Days of Summer on Saturday, August 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Peder discussed the Leucadia North Highway 101 Streetscape project and the planned review of the traffic patterns for adjacent side streets. He stated that informational sessions and a fourth workshop would take place in September or October. Peder also reported on the Coast Cruiser ridership. Julian Duval with Quail Botanical Gardens reported that the second annual Fairy Festival would be on Saturday, August 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Julian reported on the opening of the Hamilton Children's Garden and stated that they were experiencing record attendance. Garden Expressions featuring Pearl Fryar would be on Sunday, August 23. The Gala in the Gardens, honoring Huell Howser would be on Saturday, September 12, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Council Member Dalager discussed a women's long board surfing championship which may potentially happen in Encinitas in October 2010. Teri Fazio with the Encinitas Parks and Recreation Division reported on several upcoming events. The next concert in the Summer Concert Series would feature reggae band, The Devastators, on Sunday, August 16, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Moonlight Beach. The Feeling Fit Festival would be on Sunday, October 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Leo Mullen Sports Park. The outdoor movie series, Stars in the Park, would feature the films Wall-E, on September 12, at Cottonwood Creek Park, and Monsters vs. Aliens on Saturday, October 12, at Cardiff Sports Park. Teri announced that the Encinitas Recreation Guide was going green and would no longer be issued in print. Instead, the Recreation guide would be sent electronically via email and posted online. Chuck Ades, representing the San Diego Square Dancing Association, discussed the history and background of square-dancing. He announced there would be a free class for beginners on September 10, at the Encinitas Community and Senior Center. Shari Forhnueller with the San Dieguito Heritage Museum announced that they would be launching a new website next week www.sdheritage•or~. Students from Mira Costa College designed the site. Sherri reported that there would be a Pioneer Picnic on Saturday, October 31. Margo Oakley representing the San Dieguito Heritage Museum reported that the Heritage Museum was open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and on the last Saturday of each month from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. She stated they were actively lining up more volunteers to facilitate having the museum open on additional weekends. 08-06-09_Cultural Tourism_Meeting Minutes.doc Pat Reinhardt with the Encinitas Chamber and Visitors Center announced that she was officially made the Manager of the Visitor Center. Pat encouraged the group to share and post information regarding upcoming events. Flyers and other information could be sent via email to: admin@encinitaschamber.com. ~ Paula Kirpilani with Leucadia 101 reported that the fifth annual Leucadia Art Walk would be on Sunday, August 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year there would be a wine tasting garden featuring artisan winemakers. Arts Administrator Gilliam reported that student artwork from Watts Atelier was on display in the Civic Center Gallery and mosaic work from Dr. Tm Lueker was on display in the Community Room at the Encinitas Library.
