PRESENT: Council Member Dalager, Council Member Barth, Arts Administrator Gilliam, Shari
Fortmueller, Margo Oakley, Pat Reinhardt, Chuck Ades, Sally Foster, Nikki Schaper, Betty Steele, Brenda
Dizon, Deborah Van Huis, Teri Fazzio, Paula Kirpilani, Joe Koch, Dody Tucker, Reesey Shaw, and
Committee Secretary Lewis.
CALL TO ORDER - INTRODUCTIONS
Council Member Dalager called the meeting to order at 8:03 a.m. Self-introductions were made.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES - AUGUST 6, 2009 MEETING
Committee consensus to approve the minutes of the August 6, 2009 meeting.

REGULAR AGENDA
1. INFORMATION SHARING - ALL
Margo Oakley with the San Dieguito Heritage Museum discussed the Lima Bean Festival taking place on
September 25, 26, and 27. She discussed the events planned for the weekend including, tequila tasting and
chicken dinner on Friday night, Lima Bean Cook-Off on Saturday, and the Lima Bean Encinitas Follies with
a picnic on Sunday.
Pat Reinhardt with the Encinitas Visitors Center reported that she was forming a Visitors Center Committee.
The committee would meet quarterly and would be reviewing the Visitor Center website. Pat discussed
volunteers and staffing as well as items that would be offered for sale at the Visitors Center. Pat discussed
the annual calendar of events and reported that she has been working with the North County Visitors Bureau
and California Tourism Bureau to promote Encinitas events. Pat encouraged the group to send information
regarding events to her via email at admin@encinitaschamber.com
Sally Foster with Mira Costa College reported that Mira Costa and the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy have
teamed up on a few upcoming events. Coastal Cleanup Day would be on September 19, and Doug Gibson
would be giving a talk about the San Elijo Lagoon at the Mira Costa Student Center on September 11.

Nikki Schaper with Mira Costa College reported on the LIFE- Learning is for Everyone programs which ~
take place at the San Elijo Campus on Fridays at 1:00 p.m. She announced several upcoming Friday ~

programs:
Friday, September 4, "Around the World with our International Students"
Friday, September 11, "Are We Safer Now?" A focus on the state of US security post 9/11
Friday, September 25, International Film Series kick-off featuring the Japanese film: "Love and
Honor (Bushi no Ichibun)"
Friday, October 2, Guest speaker Bill Burk, the oldest man to have climbed Mt. Everest
Chuck Ades, President of Sandpipers Square Dance Club distributed flyers and encouraged the group to
participate in a free class at the Encinitas Community Center at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 10.
Paula Kirpalani with Leucadia 101 Mainstreet Association reported on the Annual Leucadia Art Walk which
took place on Sunday, August 29. She provided an update on the Coast Cruiser and reported that shuttle
service would run through Labor Day weekend and end on September 7. Paula announced several important
dates regarding the North Highway 101 Streetscape project. The city would host two informational sessions
on October 3 and October 8, followed by a fourth streetscape design workshop to review design concepts
and take further input on October 10. Paula discussed the planning activities for the next Leucadia nights
which may happen in late October to coincide with Halloween.
Teresa Barth reported on the Encinitas Taste of Mainstreet event and the Leucadia Art Walk.
Dan Dalager reported on the dedication of the San Dieguito Performing Arts Center and the Womens
Longboard Championship Surf Contest which may happen in Encinitas next year. Betty Steele with the Cardiff Chamber of Commerce announced the Rob Machado Surf Experience and
Green Expo taking place September 26 and 27 in the Cardiff Seaside Beach parking lot. She also shared I
the new Cardiff Dining Guide.
Brenda Dizon with the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce shared an image of the community poster and the
magazine-style program for the Rob Machado Surf Experience and Green Expo. She reported that more
information was available on the cardiffl Ol .com website. She discussed the event sponsors, vendors,
contests and entertainment scheduled for the event. Brenda also reported on the Cardiff Dog Days of
Summer event that was held on Saturday, August 8.
Teri Fazzio with the City of Encinitas Parks and Recreation Department discussed the recreation guide and
announced this would be the last printed guide sent via mail. The recreation guide would be available on
line. She announced the Feeling Fit Festival on Sunday, October 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Movie Night
coming up on September 12, at Cottonwood Creek Park. Terri reported on several other events happening
in Encinitas in September:
• MS Challenge Walk on September 11.
• SNAP Rummage Sale on September 12.
• Coastal Clean-Up Day on September 19.
• Lifeguard Helicopter training on September 9 and 10 from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Teri announced that the City was partnering with REI to offer more outdoor classes. One Kayaking class
and two Rock Climbing classes have been included in the latest reereation guide and would be starting soon.
Teri announced that the Best of North County awards were announced by the North County Times.
Moonlight Beach won four awards; it was named the best beach playground, best beach for body surfing,

best beach for families and best beach for solitude. Swami's was named the best surfing beach and
Cottonwood Creek Park was named the best park.
Deborah Van Huis with Off Track Gallery and the San Dieguito Art Guild announced their next featured
artist reception on September 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. She reported that the leasing had been extended for
another month on the Off Track 2, gallery located in the Encinitas Lumberyard.
Dody Tucker with DEMA reported on the Taste of Mainstreet event. The Amuse Bouche Award was given
to El Q'ero restaurant and D Street Bar and Grill won the People's Choice Award. Dody announced the
next Encinitas Classic Car Night would be on Thursday, September 17. Wavecrest Woodies would have
their annual event at Moonlight Beach on Saturday, September 19. Also on Septeinber 19, DEMA would
host the Second Annual Encinitas Lifestyle Fashion Show at the Community Room in the Encinitas Library.
There would be an artist opening reception at the DEMA office for Jessica Justice on Saturday, September
5, from 6 to 9 p.m. Dody also announced that they were working on their walking tour which would be
posted on the DEMA website soon.
Reesey Shaw with the Lux Art Institute reported that their new season was scheduled to begin on September
11. There would be a members opening on September 11, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The studio opens on
September 10, featuring marble carvings by artist Elizabeth Turk. The next Lux at Night open house event
would be on September 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. and from 6 to 7 p.m., the LUX would host a special celebration
in honor of receiving their LEED green certification. Kids at Lux event would be on Saturday, September
19, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Lux After Dark Gala would be on Saturday, September 26, at 6 p.m.
Tickets cost $250. Free Saturday at the Lux would be on Saturday, October 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Peder Norby reported on the North Highway 101 Streetscape project. Peder also provided an update on the
Pacific Station Project and announced that Urban Solace restaurant and Whole Foods were both confirmed
as major tenants. The project would also contribute an additiona1240 parking spaces for downtown. Peder
Norby reported on the Encinitas Child sculpture by Manuelita Brown and announced a fundraiser event that
would be hosted at his house on Saturday, October 3 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Arts Administrator Jim Gilliam discussed the artists currently on display at the Civic Center and the
Encinitas Library. Laura Switzer would be featured in the Civic Center Gallery at City Hall. Nola Figen and
Cheryl Griffiths would be featured in the community Room at the Encinitas Library with an exhibit entitled
"Apartogether" and Buzz Blochet would feature a display of artistic glass.
