APPROVAL OF MINUTES - SEPTEMBER 3, 2009 MEETING Committee consensus to approve the minutes of the September 3, 2009 meeting. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. REGULAR AGENI)A 1. SELECTION OF A MEMBER OF THE CULTURAL TOURISM COMMITTEE TO SERVE ON THE COMPREHENSIVE GENERAL PLAN UPDATE STEERING COMMITTEE - D. LANGAGER Diane Langager Principal Planner with the City of Encinitas Planning and Building Department discussed the background and goals of the General Plan iJpdate Steering Committee. She reported that the committee name would soon be changed to "Advisory Cominittee." Diane explained the role and requirements of the selected representative. Julian Duval with San Diego Botanic Gardens (formerly Quail Gardens) was selected as the representative for the Cultural Tourism Committee. 2. INFORMATION SHARING - ALL Diane Langager announced several upcoming events for the North Highway 101 Streetscape Project. On Saturday, October 3, there would be an educational workshop at the Encinitas Community and Senior Center. On Thursday, October 8, there would be an open house to display the plans, and on Saturday, October 10, there would be a fourth and final workshop at the Encinitas Community and Senior Center. Arts Administrator Jim Gilliam reported on the upcoming Mary Pickford Silent Film Festival taking place November 6, 7, and 8 at the La Paloma Theater in Encinitas. Memorabilia would be on display at the Encinitas Library. Tickets would cost $10 per movie. 10-01-09 CulturalTourism_MeetingMintues.doc i Deborah Van Huis with the San Dieguito Art Guild and Off-Track Gallery announced a joint venture event called Art from the Heart, with North Coast Oncology Center in Vista. There was a reception , planned for Friday, October, 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. Off-Track Gallery #2 was still open in the Encinitas ~i Lumberyard and they planned to stay there until a new tenant leases the space. Deborah also announced a small image show for artwork 12 inches or smaller coming up in December. Grace Madamba with the LUX Art Institute announced that Elizabeth Turk's last day in residence would ~ be on October 3rd. On October 8, the Lux Art Institute would be hosting a free screening of the PBS series Art:21 (Art in the twenty-first century) episodes 2 and 3 on fantasy and transformation at 6:30 and ~ _ 8 p.m. The Studio and Artist's Residence would also be open free of charge from 5 to 8 p.m. The next free Saturday at Lux would be on October 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Grace announced the Lux would be featuring a new studio series event on Saturday, October 17. Former Lux resident artist, Daniel Wheeler, would return to LUX to discuss the exhibit of Elizabeth Turk. Tickets would cost $5 for members and $10 for non-members, and would feature a wine reception at 5:00 p.m. followed by discussion at 5:30 p.m. The next Lux at Night would be Wednesday, October 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. Drew Cady representing the Hutchins Consort announced the opening of their l Oth anniversary season, this Saturday in La Jolla at the Neurosciences institute, and on Sunday in Newport Beach at St. Mark ~ Presbyterian Church. He discussed recent local perforrnances and announced the Free Family Concert Series would resume at the Encinitas Library Community Room on Saturday, October 10, at 10 a.m. and would continue on the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. Drew also announced a two hour benefit concert for the Community Resource Center's Annual Holiday Baskets program for families in North County. An Evening of Harmony would be on Saturday, November 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, located on Calle Magdelna. Teri Fazzio with the Encinitas Parks and Recreation Department reported on several upcoming events. • Fire Prevention Expo at Moonlight Beach on October 3, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. • Feeling Fit Festival on Sunday, October 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Leo 1Vlullen Sports Park • Swami's Surfing Association Surf Contest at D Street on October 10 and 11. • The MS Bike to Bay rest stop would be at Moonlight Beach on October 10, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. • ISF Surf Series contest on October 17, 18, 31 and November 1, at D Street. • Encinitas Holiday Parade in downtown Encinitas on Saturday, December Sth. The Theme would be Seasons Greenings. Council Member Dalager reported on the progress of the Women's Longboard World Surfing Championship event which may come to Encinitas in October of next year. Pat Reinhardt with the Encinitas Visitors Center discussed the Lima Bean Festival, Rob Machado Surf contest, the San Diego Botanic Gardenas Gala, and other events which all took place this past weekend. Pat discussed the activity at the Visitors Center and announced that there was now a section posted on the website featuring web links and calendars to help drive exposure for local events and venues. Paul Davis commented on the San Dieguito United Methodist Church organ and free concerts heid there. He announced the church would be having a rummage sale on October 16 and 17. Paul also reported that San Diego County Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission had a new director, Brian Albright, who was also the president of the National Parks and Recreation Association. Julian Duval with San Diego Botanic Gardens distributed flyers and announced a few upcoming events. The San Diego North Convention and Visitors Bureau would be hosting their fall mixer at the Hamilton 10-01-09_Cultural Tourism_Meeting Mintues.doc Children's Garden on Thursday, October 8 from 4 to 6 p.m. and the annual Orchid Fair would be taking place over the weekend. Kathleen Lees with the Leucadia Town Council reported that there was a fun and easy low-key hangout with the members at Leucadia Oaks Park on Sunday at 2 p.m. She announced the annual membership meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, October 13 at the Encinitas Library. Kathleen discussed the Sunday Leucadia Farmer's Market and reported they would be there promoting the membership and streetscape meetings. She also amlounced that Gene Chapo would be the Leucadia Town Council's representative on the General Plan Steering Committee. Paula Kirpilani with the Leucadia 101 Mainstreet Association discussed the streetscape project and their efforts to promote the upcoming events. Fall Leucadia Nights would be on Saturday, October 24, and would feature a Howl-o-ween pet parade and costume contest. Funds raised would go to Rancho Coastal Hurnane Society. Peder Norby Encinitas Highway 101 Coordinator reported on the Cardiff Chamber of Commerce Rob Machado Surf Contest and Green Expo which took place last weekend. Peder announced he would be hosting a fundraiser for the Encinitas Child sculpture by Manuelita Brown on Saturday, October 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. Contact DEMA for tickets and information. The DEMA Installation Dinner would be on Thursday, October 15 at D Street Bar and Grill. DEMA would be celebrating the end of Doug Long's two-year presidency and welcoming the incoming president, Dave Agyagos. Sally Foster with Mira Costa Community College discussed the free, LIFE - Learning is for Everyone, programs which take place at 1 p.m. on Fridays. On Friday, October 16, Sally Foster would be the featured presenter. Sally also reported on the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy's Birds of a Feather event and Coastal Cleanup day. Reportedly, over 400 pounds of trash was collected in a two hour period, which included 12,831 cigarettes butts collected from a one mile stretch of Manchester Avenue.
