2009-10-20 CITY OF ENCINITAS SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION MINUTES Meeting Date October 20, 2009 2:00 PM 1.CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL The meeting was called to order at 2:05 PM Present: Vice-Chair Finch, Commissioners Campbell, Pollack and Drielsma Also Present: Senior Center Manager Goodsell and Program Assistant Roff Absent: Chair Vance, Commissioners Harp and Larson 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Pledge of Allegiance led by Commissioner Campbell. 3. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS Haley Kwon from the Encinitas Library introduced Commissioners to the Library Partnership program. 4. CHANGES TO AGENDA None 5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF THE CONSENT CALENDAR A.Approval of Minutes for the regular meeting September 15, 2009 THE MINUTES WERE APPROVED TO THE SEPTEMBER 15, 2009 MEETING. THE MOTION WAS APPROVED 4-0 (COMMISSIONERS VANCE, HARP AND LARSON WERE NOT PRESENT). 6. PRESENTATION None 7. OLD BUSINESS A. Status Report on Project C.A.R.E. Senior Center Manager Goodsell reviewed the September 2009 Project C.A.R.E. report. B. Status Report on the Senior Center Senior Center Manager Goodsell provided Commissioners with the November/December Prime Times, handouts on new Senior programs and reported the Out & About program is seeking military volunteer drivers. Commissioner Drielsma provided information that Brooklyn, NY is piloting a program using school buses to provide senior transportation. 3 C. Update Report on Ad Hoc Subcommittees Outreach- No Report Disaster Preparedness- Commissioner Drielsma reported the Disaster Preparedness presentation will be October 27, 2:00 PM at the Senior Center. Motion to dissolve this subcommittee after this presentation carried 4-0. Senior Information Fair- Vice-Chair Finch provided an overview of plans for the 2010 Senior Fair, which will be held April 29, 2010 from 9 AM to 12 PM. This year’s theme will be Celebrating Seniors. Motion to accept the Senior Information Fair 2009 Mission Statement Goals and Strategies carried 4-0. Motion to carry all sub-committees’ Goals, Mission Statements and Strategies forward into 2010 carried 4-0. Special Reports -None 8. NEW BUSINESS A. Community Focus Group Commission consensus was reached to have the Outreach Subcommittee move forward with a Community Focus Group. The first planning meeting will be held December 1 at 10:30 AM. 9. COMMISSIONER’S CORNER/ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Commissioners Commissioner Pollack requested press releases for Volunteer Drivers. Commissioner Drielsma met Haley while volunteering at the Encinitas Library and invited her to speak to the Commission. Vice-Chair Finch provided an update on the presentation to Council. B. Staff Senior Center Manager Goodsell provided a handout on the H1N1 Influenza and reported the Holiday Parade this year will be December 5 and the theme is Season’s Greenings. 10.
