SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION MINUTES
Meeting Date April 21, 2009, 2:00 PM
1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
The meeting was called to order at 2:00 PM.
Present: Chair Vance, Vice-Chair Finch, Commissioners Drielsma, Harp, Larson, and
Pollack

Vice-Chair Finch led the Pledge of Allegiance

5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF CONSENT CALENDAR
A. Approval of Minutes for the regular meeting March 17, 2009.
THE MINUTES WERE APPROVED TO THE March 17, 2009 MEETING. THE MOTION
WAS APPROVED 6-0.
6. PRESENTATIONS
A. Laurin Pause, Executive Director, with the Community Resource Center
Executive Director Pause provided information on the Community Resource Center services,
with special focus on services available to seniors.
7. OLD BUSINESS
A. Status Report on Project C.A.R.E.

Senior Center Manager Goodsell reviewed the statistical report for March 2009 and
reported she is following up on posting an announcement on Cox Communications
Community Bulletin Board on cable Channel 18.
B. Status Report on the Senior Center
Senior Center Manager Goodsell provided Senior Center handouts, the May/June
Prime Times, a map of the Encinitas senior population, age 55 and older, articles on the
new Oceanside Senior Center and reported enrollment is low for the June 2 trip to
Balboa Park. Chair Vance suggested adding streets to the senior population map.
C. Update Report on Ad Hoc Subcommittees (Outreach, Senior Disaster Preparedness,
Senior Information Fair and Representative Reports).
Outreach –
The subcommittee provided a handout of their Mission Statement, 2009 Goal
and Strategies. Commissioner Harp recommended changing 100% in the Mission Statement
to maximum.
Senior Disaster Preparedness –
Commissioner Drielsma reported the subcommittee is
planning a presentation in the fall at the Senior Center.
Senior Information Fair-
Vice-Chair Finch reviewed the Senior Fair agenda, traffic flow and
survey. Vice-Chair Finch provided a handout of the subcommittee’s Mission Statement, 2009
Goal and Strategies. Commissioner Harp reported the Senior Foundation would not have a
booth at this year’s fair.
Council Contact –
Chair Vance reported attending the Mayor’s breakfast with Vice-Chair
Finch. Vice-Chair Finch reported being contacted to represent seniors on the Community
Garden Committee.
Senior Foundation –
Commissioner Harp inquired if the bench cushions at the
Community/Senior Center had been reinstalled with straps. Senior Center Manager Goodsell
will follow up.
AIS –
Senior Center Manager Goodsell reported A.I.S. will host a Vital Aging Conference,
June 4 from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
8. NEW BUSINESS
A. Senior Information Fair Assignments & Activities
Vice-Chair Finch recommend Commissioners Larson, Pollack and Harp work the entry table,
Commissioners Drielsma and Campbell work the information table and Chair Vance and
Vice-Chair Finch alternate working the entrance and exit.
B. Volunteer for Community Grant Panel
Commissioner Drielsma volunteered to represent the Senior Commission.

C. Off site tour and lunch
Commission consensus was reached to begin the June 16 meeting at 10 AM, tour the
Oceanside Senior Center and have lunch at Miyabi’s in Encinitas.
9. COMMISSIONER’S CORNER/ANNOUNCEMENTS
A. Commissioners
Commissioner Drielsma reported being contacted for information on Mary Pickford, a Girl with
Curls, and her involvement in San Diego North County.
Vice-Chair Finch requested the Community Garden be added to the May agenda and
suggested a Crime Prevention Presentation.
Chair Vance requested seniors helping seniors, the Volunteer Sheriff’s provide a presentation
specific to senior issues they identify and create a Senior Buddy System be added to the May
agenda.
B. Staff
Senior Center Manager Goodsell provided an article about the oldest woman on record, who
is 115 years old and living in Los Angeles.
