MEETING MINUTES
MEETING DATE: March 4, 2009

1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
Present: Chairperson Novack, Vice Chairperson Felzer, Commissioners
Michelle Ferreirae, Nick Ferreirae, Ogden, Lawson, Marow, Alec
Jolly and Marianna Jolly.
Also
Present: Senior Management Analyst Stauffer and Administrative
Coordinator Dakovich.

4. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF THE CONSENT CALENDAR
A. Approval of Minutes for Meeting of February 4, 2009.

SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE FEBRUARY 4, 2009
MEETING. MOTION CARRIED 9-0.
5. OLD BUSINESS

6. NEW BUSINESS
A. Community Resource Center Guest Speaker – Rebecca Hartstrom
Chairperson Novack welcomed guest speaker Rebecca Hartstrom, from the
Community Resource Center.
Rebecca Hartstrom, Domestic Violence Coordinator at the Community Resource

Center, 656 2 St., Encinitas, thanked the Commission for the opportunity to
provide them with information on Center services, Teen Dating Violence, and
volunteer opportunities. She noted the Center provides a shelter network for the
homeless, victims of domestic violence and also has a free food program.
She reported National statistics that 1-5 teens are in a violent relationship and
1-3 teens know someone in a violent relationship. She distributed and reviewed
copies of the Teen Dating Bill of Rights, and provided the National Teen Abuse
and Violence hot line number for those needing assistance.
She also reviewed the many volunteer opportunities at the Center, noting there
are various programs and needs throughout the year, and suggested interested
Commissioners contact Resource Center Volunteer Coordinator Sara Loveless
for further information.
Chairperson Novack thanked Rebecca Hartstrom for her presentation.
7. COMMISSIONER’S CORNER
A. Commission
Commissioner Marow noted San Dieguito Academy had recently put on a spoof
of Academy Idol. He also provided information on the upcoming Community
Grant Panel, noting the Panel would like a representative from the Youth
Commission to participate.
Commissioner Marianna Jolly noted Spring Break is almost here.
Commissioner Nick Ferreirae advised Diegueno Middle School Spirit Day will
be held March 17.
Commissioner Lawson noted Spring sports tryouts were beginning.
Commissioner Alec Jolly advised he was working on the college application
process with Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and UC Riverside.
Commissioner Ogden noted the upcoming dance at La Costa Canyon High
School, May 27. She also enjoyed the recent Teen EXPO, great time, good
advertising, and interesting job opportunities.
Chairperson Novack noted the current San Dieguito Union High School District
spending freeze on all non-essential items. He also provided information on
a recent letter he received from the City regarding his meeting attendance record
and noted the letter referred to absences during last year’s term. He suggested

this issue be addressed as an agenda item and in the
Commission agreed to agendize this issue for April.
B. Staff
Senior Management Analyst Stauffer distributed information and an application

for the upcoming Sister City trip to Amakusa, Japan, July 23-30, 2009 for 8, 9,

and 10 graders and encouraged eligible teens to apply.
