SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION MINUTES

1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
The meeting was called to order at 2:03 PM.
Present: Vice Chairperson Harp, Commissioners Drielsma, Finch, Larson and Price
arriving at 2:07 PM

5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF CONSENT CALENDAR
A. Approval of Minutes for the regular meeting January 20, 2009.
COMMISSIONER DRIELSMA MOVED COMMISSIONER FINCH SECONDED TO
APPROVE THE MINUTES WITH CHANGES TO THE JANUARY 20, 2009 MEETING.
THE MOTION WAS APPROVED 5-0.
6. PRESENTATIONS
A. Introduction of Recreation Supervisor, Jordan Heller
Supervisor Heller introduced himself and provided his background to the Commission. He
answered Commission questions.
B. Senior Information Fair- Ken Rundle, Recreation Supervisor II
Supervisor Rundle reported the Fair will be held on May 7, 2009 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at
the Encinitas Community and Senior Center with a Luau theme. Supervisor Rundle thanked
the subcommittee members for their time and input. This year’s Fair will include vendors, an

opportunity drawing, and possibly food donated by a vendor. The Senior Commission will
have a booth at the Fair entrance and be the greeters for this event and fees remain the
same as last year.
7. OLD BUSINESS
A. Status Report on Project C.A.R.E.
Senior Center Manager Goodsell reviewed the statistical report for January 2009 noting
five new clients served during the month and two false alarms, one of which was in the
hospital and the other had their telephone off the hook. Senior Center Manager
Goodsell reported staff will attend a February 23 training to look at the possibility of
switching the R.U.O.K. calls to the reverse 911 system.
B. Status Report on the Senior Center
Senior Center Manager Goodsell reviewed the handouts and program flyers.
Commissioner Finch requested advance notice of flyers and was provided with
information that all programs are listed on the Prime Times calendar that is published
six times each year.
C. Update Report on Ad Hoc Subcommittees (Outreach, Senior Housing, Senior
Disaster Preparedness, Senior Information Fair and Representative Reports).

Commissioner Drielsma reported the subcommittee is
working on planning a presentation at the Senior Center.
Senior Information Fair-
Commissioner Price reported Residence by Hyatt may be the food
sponsor for this year’s Fair. Consensus was reached to locate the Senior Commission booth
at the entrance for this year’s Fair. Commissioner Drielsma complimented Supervisor Rundle
on an excellent job of coordinating this event.

Senior Foundation –
Vice Chairperson Harp reported the cushions for benches at the
Senior/Community Center will be arriving soon and the Foundation has donated to the Out
and About Program, Volunteer Appreciation Party, and the Senior Pool Tournaments.
AIS –
Senior Center Manager Goodsell referred the Senior Citizen Commission to the AIS
Agenda Report.

8. NEW BUSINESS
A. Discussion on Senior Services Marketing Video
Vice-Chairperson Harp reported he would like to see the video on the City website and the
subcommittee needs to determine the cost to update the video. Commissioner Finch
recommended a presentation at the Encinitas Library and at the Senior Center to promote
the video. Senior Center Manager Goodsell reported on the outdated information on the
video, and recommended playing the video for senior groups who meet at the Center.
Commissioner Finch stated the background music was too loud and suggested approaching
the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce for a donation. Vice-Chairperson Harp requested
Commissioners send him information and he would work on photo changes and updating the
script.
9. COMMISSIONER’S CORNER/ANNOUNCEMENTS
A. Commissioners
Commissioner Larson requested contact information from fellow Commissioners for placing
signs along the freeway; Commissioners reported Cal Trans would be the contact.
Commissioner Finch requested 2009 – 2010 Goals be placed as an agenda item for March
and asked when the Handbook would be updated; staff reported at the March meeting.
Commissioner Harp recommended all Commissioners attend the Senior Center lunch on a
weekly basis to receive input from seniors in the community.
Commissioner Drielsma volunteered to give a presentation at the Senior Center on California
History. Senior Center Manager Goodsell reported he would need to submit a Presentation
Application.
B. Staff
Senior Center Manager Goodsell reported Out and About volunteers are needed.
Commissioner Price suggested advertising for volunteers on the Public Channel
Announcements station.
