CALL TO ORDER - INTRODUCTION5 ~ Dan Dalager called the meeting to order at 8;03 a.m. Self introductions were made. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - FEBRUARY 7, 2008 MEETING Committee consensus to approve the minutes of the February 7; 2008 meeting. : ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. \ - REGULAR AGENDA J 1. REPORT ON INTERNET USE OF WWW.ENCINITAS LIVE.COM - J. GILLIAM Jim Gilliam provided an update on the status of the Cultural Tourism Committee website www.encinitaslive.com. A detailed report was distributed which listed hit counts, traffic sources, content overview, monthly activity, hits per day, and top traffic sources. 2. WELCOME THE LUX ART INSTITUTE AND THE SAN DIEGUITO ART GUILD TO THE CULTURAL TOURISM COMMITTEE - J. GILLIAM Reese Shaw, Executive Director of the Lux Art Institute was introduced to the committee. Reese reported the Lux Art institute opened in mid-November and operates on Thursdays and Fridays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Reese distributed handouts regarding Artist in Residence, Astrid Preston and announced the next Artist in Residence, Julie Heffernan, was set for Apri12008. Family 03-06-08 Cultural Tourism Action Minutes.doc Day would be Saturday, March 8th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Lux at Night would be the third Wednesday of each month from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. For more information visit the Lux website at www.luxartinstitute.org. Grace Swanson, Board Member of the San Dieguito Art Guild was introduced to the committee. Grace reported the grand opening for Off Track Gallery was planned for March 14th at 4;45 p.m. at the new gallery location on the corner of 2"d and D Street. Grace reported the gallery hours would be from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. On Mother's Day weekend they would host garden tours at several homes in the North County area to raise funds for the gallery. 3. UPDATE ON THE ENCINITAS BOATHOUSES - P. NORBY Highway 101 Coordinator Peder Norby provided an update on the Encintias Boathouses and reported the property was in escrow. The property consists of six units total with four units in back and two boat houses up front. Goals for the project included: purchase of the boat houses with ownership by the Encinitas Preservation Foundation, register the property with the National Historic Trust, and eventually open the proPertY to the public. A fundraising campaign would kick-off soon to help raise the needed funds. 4. UPDATE ON THE CHAPEL OF AWARENESS SPIRITUAL CHURCH - P. NORBY Peder Norby provided an update to the committee regarding the Chapel of Awareness Spiritual Church. He reporked the congregation hopes to donate the building to the Encinitas Preservation Foundation in an effort to preserve the building. The group hopes to maintain use of the chapel; which has been operating since the 1950's. Peder reported the congregation only uses a portion of the building on Sundays and Wednesday evenings, which might provide opportunities to open the unused spaces for public use. ANNOUNCEMENTS Jim Gilliam reported on the grand opening of the Encinitas Community Library which was held on Saturday, February 23, 2008. Approximately 4,800 people attended the event and over, 998 applications for library cards were received that weekend. Jim reported the Community Library was open from 9;30 a.m. unti18:00 p.m. on Monday through Saturdays, and on Sundays from 1;00 to 5:00 p.m. He reported the library Community Room was available for rent at $100 an hour or'$25 an hour to non-profit groups, applications available through the lobby at Encinitas City Hall. Paul Davis representing the Encinitas Rotary announced their organization awarded a check for $59,000 to Hand-in-Hand, an organization which helps promote global democracy through Jewish-Arab education. He also reported on April Sth Rotary would assist with painting the Community Resource Center. On Saturday May, 31St Encinitas Rotary would host their SthAnnual Wine Festival at Quail Botanical Gardens. Shari Fortmueller with the San Dieguito Heritage Museum announced the following events: Annual meeting at Quail Botanical Gardens on March 16th ; Landscaping and cosmetic face lift for the Teten House on Apri126th; Skateboard legends exhibit with the debut of Skateboard Legends documentary on May lOth; and the Annual Deep-Pit Barbecue on Saturday, June 21St Nan Sterman announced the Enciriitas Garden Festival would be in Olivenhein on May 3rd from 10:00 a.m. unti14:00 p.m. Tickets provided through Anderson's/La Costa nursery or via the website at www.encinitasgardenfestival.org. 03-06-08_Cultural Tourism_Action Minutes.doc Karen Coleman with the Encinitas Visitor Center announced they would have an open house on Saturday, March 8th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m, for resident artist, Doris Keats. The March Chamber Sundowner would be on Tuesday, March 18th at When in Rome. Teresa Barth reported the Beach Shuttle bus was presented at the Council Goal Setting Workshop on March Sth. Peder Norby reported a draft of the Cardiff Specific Plan was being drafted. Upon completion, the draft plan would be given to the Planning Commission, then the Coastal Commission, and finally to the Encinitas City Council for approval. Leucadia was beginning the streetscape planning process. Alkeia Wojcik distributed handouts regarding the Cob workshop at Mira Costa College. Those participating in the workshop would construct a bench using the Cob building technique. Free community programs LIFE - Learning is for Everyone held on Fridays at 1:00 p.m, at Mira Costa College. Sally Foster announced San Elijo Lagoon Day was scheduled for Saturday, May 10th and would feature interpretive walks and kid-friendly activities. The Visitor Center and parking lot were closed to make way for construction of the new Visitor Center building. . Dody Tucker with DEMA announced they had a new website. www.encinitas101.com. DEMA has finished the new Encintias Dining guide; a sample guide was passed among the committee members. The next DEMA Mornings event was scheduled for March 18th at 9:00 a.m. in the new Community Room at the Encinitas Library. ~ Paula Kirpilani with Leucadia 101 announced that tliey had a new e-newsletter. Subscriptions for the electronic newsletter could be obtained via their website at www.leucadia101.com, Paula announced the next Leucadia Streetscape workshop was scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on May 19th at Encinitas City 'Hall. An e-waste recycling event was scheduled at Paul Ecke School on April 19th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p:m, Leucadia Nights was rescheduled for the evening of April 19th and would feature afterhours walk- about in town and surf movies in the park. Sally Foster reported on a joint effort of the Encinitas Chamber and Mira Costa College to host Encinitas' First Annual Cinco de Mayo Festival on Saturday, May 3ra at Mira Costa College.
