PRESENT: Council Member Dalager, Council Member Barth, Arts Administrator Gilliam, Shari Fortmueller, Kathleen Lees, Paul Davis, Joe Koch, John, McIsaac; Karen Coleman, Gary tucker, Sally Foster, Alketa Wojuk, Patricia Bell, Liz Taylor, Julian Duval, Judy Thum, and Committee Secretary Lewis CALL TO ORDER - INTRODUCTIONS Council Member Dalager called the meeting to order at 8;04 a.m. ; APPROVAL OF MINUTES - JANUARY 3, 2008 MEETING Committee consensus to approve the minutes of the January 3, 2008 meeting. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None REGULAR AGENDA L UPDATES ON SHUTTLE BEACH BUS SUB-COMMITTEE - T. BARTH Council Member Teresa Barth reported on the progress of the Beach Bus Sub-Committee. Karen Coleman and Peder Norby prepared a draft report containing information from'a survey conducted by DEMA for presentation to City Council at a future meeting. It was determined the beach bus would run ten hours a day for 15 weekends beginning Memorial Day weekend and ending Labor Day. The bus would run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays only and would travel the Hwy 101 corridor through Encinitas. Sponsorship funding was still needed. Teresa stated the objective was to run this year as a pilot project and potentially issue an RFP next year; noting that future runs would hopefully include electric and/or biodiesel options. 2. NEW ENCINITAS LIBRARY GRAND OPENING EVENT - J. GILLIAM Arts Administrator Gilliam reported on the planned activities for the Encinitas Library Grand Opening Event scheduled for Saturday, February 23, 2008. Bag pipes at 8:30 a.m., Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at 9:00 a.m., and the Library open to the public at 10:00 a.m. Various artworks on display with musical talent scheduled to perform throughout the day. 3. THE BIG READ- J. THUM Judy Thum reported on The Big Read coming to Encinitas in March, 2008. The book, To Kill a Mocking Bird, by Harper Lee was selected. Kick-off was scheduled for March lst with events planned throughout the entire month of March. Handouts with detailed information were distributed. 4. AGENCY UPDATES • ENCINITAS GHAMBER OF COMMERCE UPDATES Gary Tucker reported that the Encinitas Chamber was collaborating with DEMA on several projects. He shared an article featured in San Diegan about North County with higlilights on Encinitas: He stated they were looking far ideas and story lines about Encinitas for future articles. Contact DEMA with suggestions. The Paper Rose had their grand opening event on February 2, 2008. They moved ,from the Lumberyard in Encinitas to Vulcan Avenue in Leuc.adia, On February 19, 2008, San Diego Trust Bank would host the next Sundowner. There was a Ribbon Cutting event for a new laser surgery center on El Camino ReaL • ENCINITA5 VISITORS CENTER UPDATES Karen Coleman with the Encinitas Visitor Center reported the Artist in Resident program was booked through fall. Rosanna Co, a new resident in Encinitas, was scheduled as the next artists in residence, and Doris Keats, long time Encinitas resident would follow. • CARDIFF CHAMBER OF COMMERCE UPDATES None • LEUCADIA 101 MAINSTREET UPDATES Patricia Bell with Leucadia 101 Mainstreet reported they have an established web presence and have launched an email newsletter. She reported that streetscape planning was scheduled to begin on Saturday, February 23, 2008 with a walking tour to view the area, followed by a workshop meeting at City Hall. Tree replacement would be a large focus of the streetscape design. • DEMA UPDATES Joe Koch reported that DEMA holds meetings on the third Tuesday of each month at Encinitas TV. ANNOUNCEMENTS Shari Fortmueller with San Dieguito Heritage Museum reported edits were being made to the Surf Legends video and Cal State San Marcos students would be working on skateboard video with a debut schedulecl for May l Oth at the opening of the skateboard exhibit. She also announced their traditional deep pit barbeque was scheduled for Saturday, June 21, 2008. 02-07-08 Cultural Tourism Action Minutes.doc Carol Koch retired from Paul Ecke School and she has been helping to redo third grade field trips and to expand the field trip club. Rotary and The Friends of Cardiff Library have also assisted. Julian Duval with Quail Botanical Gardens provided copies of their newsletter. He announced that a 30 minute video on water conservation which was featured at the annual meeting on Jan. 12'h would be made available to public along with landscape displays on water friendly gardens. The weekend trip to view private gardens in Cuernavaca, Mexico was scheduled for April 11'h. Dan Dalager reported on the San Dieguito High School Academy fundraiser scheduled for Saturday, February 9th which would help raise funds for a new Visual Performing Arts Center for the Academy. Sally Foster with Mira Costa reported they were collaborating with the Encinitas Chamber to put on a Cinco de Mayo event on May 5, 2008 from l-6 p.m. She also announced Mira Costa College would host a Cob Workshop through Continuing Community Education, scheduled for April 18-24 with a master builder from Holland. Cob is a fortn of natural building us'ing clay, sand, and straw. The cost is $250 for four days. Alketa Wojuk reported the Mira Costa Student Center opened three weeks ago, featuring a new gourmet cafeteria. The Grand Opening event was scheduled on February 19th from 5-6 pm. LIFE (learning is for everyone) programs geared towards seniars in the community are free to the public. A Chinese New Year event was scheduled for Tuesday, February 12'h and would include dragon dancing. A silent film accompanied by live musician was scheduled for February 22"d at 7:00 p.m. DISCUSSION OF AGENDA ITEMS FOR FUTURE MEETINGS Report on internet use of Encinitas Live website.
