PRESENT: Council Member Dan Dalager, Arts Administrator James Gilliam, Sally Foster, John Mc Isaac, Paul Davis, Alkeia Wojcik, Shari Fortmueller, Christine Beathard, Julian Duval, Joe McKaizer CALL TO ORDER - INTRODUCTIONS Council Member Dalager called the meeting to order at 8:07 a.m. Self-introductions were made. APPROVAL OF MINUTE5 - APRIL 5, 2007 MEETING Committee consensus to approve the minutes of the April 5, 2007 meeting. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS : None REGULAR AGENDA L ENCINITAS VISITORS CENTER UPDATE: Gary Tucker, CEO of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce, provided an update on the Encinitas Visitor Center, which was relocated in July 2007 to the corner of 2°d and H 5treet after 15 years at Fetco Center off of Encinitas Blvd. The Encinitas Visitor Center and Encinitas Chamber of Commerce share one building but remain separate entities. The relocation allowed for an increase in space from 1,200 sf. to 2,400 sf.; 1,300 of which is dedicated to the Visitor's Center. There is a conference room which holds approximate 16-18 people. The conference room is available to local, non-profit community groups free of charge. Attorneys and other for profit businesses may rent the room. The Visitor Center now employs a new, full time employee, Karen Coleman, and is in the process of evaluating the volunteer situation. They are looking into opportunities with Mira Costa College for internships, volunteers, and employee tradeoffs for people who are planning a career in business and/or travel related fields. 10-04 2007-Action Minutes.doc The Visitor Center ran an ad about Encinitas in San Diego Magazine. They plan to do more tourism related advertising for the City and Downtown, as well as distribute information to hotels. A suggestion was made to include distribution of information and pamphlets to the various Timeshares in the region along the coastal corridor. The Visitor's Center is featuring a showcase of local artists. They plan to feature a new Artist in ~ Residence approximately every six weeks, with a reception planried at the end of the show. Mary Fleener will be the first artist. 2. - ENCINITAS LIBRARY PUBLIC ART PROJECTS UPDATE - Jim Gilliam James Gilliam, Arts Administrator for the City of Encinitas, provided an update on the Public Art submissions for the Encinitas Library. The library is currently under construction and is scheduled to be completed in November, with a grand opening targeted for January. A scale model of the library was used to show the three specific areas designated as public artwork opportunities, which include two access gates and an outdoor courtyard. The group was then shown scale mock-ups of the artwork being considered for placement. The Selection Committee reviewed the submissions and narrowed their choice down to three artists. The Arts commission also reviewed the submissions and chose an alternate three artists. The City Council will vote to determine the final selection. 3. ENCINITAS LIVE WEBSITE UPDATE -Jim Gilliam James Gilliam presented the new city website www.encnitaslive.com. The site was created to promote cultural tourism by helping to promote art and local events taking place in the City. Community groups, artists, and other organizations in the city can upload their information up into the site. There are a series of images that appear in rotating arder on the home page of the website. James Gilliam is accepting submissions of local images to be included in the rotation. Please submit images in horizontal format, along with a photo and/or artist credit. Both daytime and nighttime images are wanted. Jim noted that eventually there will be an email notification component to the site, as well as individual sections to feature each of the five distinct Encinitas communities. ANNOUNCEMENTS Sally Foster and Alkeia Wojcik with Mira Costa College made two announcements. First, Mira Costa College hosts free lectures along with the Lagoon Conservancy through a program called LIFE - Learning is for Everyone. There are different presentations on Fridays at 1:00 PM. The events are geared towards seniors and included international films, guest lecturers and presentations by international students. Second, the Mira Costa Student Center will be completed in November, with move-in targeted for December, and opening by January. There will be two conference rooms available for rent. The conference facility can be opened into one large room with a capacity for 80 people, or split into two sections with the capacity for 40 people in each section. Non profit groups may use the conference room free of charge. The Student center will feature all high-tech amenities. There will be a full cafeteria, serving hot food, as well as an upstairs patio with lagoon view. 10-04 2007-Action Minutes.doc Julian Duval with Quail Botanical Gardens stated that they hosted the Gala in the Gardens fundraising event on Sept. 8th. The event was very successful and the funds raised help to provide support for operation of the gardens. The Gardens reported record attendance again this year. Upcoming Events: The San Diego International Orchid Fair will be held October Sth -7th. TheAnnual Fall Plant Sale will take place Oct. 20th and 21 st. Shari Fortmueller with San Dieguito Heritage Museum stated that the museum has moved to the new site. The grand opening event will be on Saturday, October. 20th from 2:00-5:00 p.m.' Paul Davis was there to promote the Encinitas Rotary Club. Rotary can provide organizations with a fund raising activity, if they are in need of one. They host a Wine Festival, which has been very successful in the past: The Rotary fundraisers include the event handling and entertainment; the co- hosting community group provides the member base as attendees. Profits from the event are shaxed with the Rotary Club, who in the past has been able to give their portion of the profits back to various community organizations. The San Diego County Parks and Rec. Department has funded a new Visitor Center for the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Area. The new Visitor Center will offer outdoor tours to schools and the community and offer educational activities: The new Visitor Center will be located in Cardiff in the same location as the old building. Gary Tucker with the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center announced that there are Sundowner events on the third Tuesday of every month. The next one will be on Tuesday, October 16th at the Super Suppers on Encinitas blvd.
