Mr. Norby noted that in July, training would be given to those individuals interested in conducting
the interviews. The training would ensure that all five of the communities' oral histories were
conducted in the same fashion and would include the same type of information. Once the oral
histories were conducted, they would be digitized and placed on community websites. All of the
actual histories from all five communities would be housed at the San Diego Historical Society.
Mr. Norby reported that the History Without Walls Subcommittee was the ideal venue to organize
the project in Encinitas. He indicated that each community would try to obtain 10 to 20 histories.
The histories should not necessarily be of the most prominent people in the community but of those
with the most important stories. Each decade had importance to the history and development of
Highway 101. The interviewers should look for the people with stories that relate to those
important events. The idea of the project was to capture the stories of people who remember those
times and events first hand.
PLAN OF ACTION:
Outreach efforts: Identify individuals that would have first hand recollections and stories of
important events beginning in 1908 that were related to the history of Highway 101. The
subcommittee would need to get the word out to these individuals by issuing press releases, placing
ads in the local newspapers, and by contacting the local news reporters, historical societies,
chambers and town councils.
Mayor Houlihan and Mr. Norby would issue a Press Release. Pam Walker and Jan Grice agreed to
have their names and telephone numbers listed as the contact persons. Jan Grice could be reached
at 858-756-2219 and Pam Walker could be reached at 760-753-1904.
Trainers: Lloyd O'Connell, Elaine Masters, Carol Jensen, Ken Hayward, Lois Sunrich, Billy Stern
and Wendy Haskett would be trained to conduct the interviews. Christie Kramer would attend the
training for back up as needed. Ms. Sunrich agreed to be the contact person for the training. Once
available, Mr. Norby would provide the training information to Ms. Sunrich to disperse the others.
Interviewees: The San Dieguito Heritage Museum, the Encinitas Historical Society, and Wendy
Haskett would help identify the interviewees, organize and keep a list of the oral histories, and
would provide updates to the subcommittee members via e-mail. Elaine Masters agreed to assist
with the transcription and editing of the interviews.
Timeline:
July - oral history training;
August and September - collecting of oral histories;
October - Transcribing, editing, and digitizing of the histories.
