Mayor Houlihan called the meeting to order at 11:04 A.M. and self-introductions were made.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES - JUNE 29, 2004 MEETING
Sub-committee consensus to approve the minutes of the June 29, 2004 meeting.

This item was continued to the next meeting.
UPDATE ON THE HIGHWAY 101 ORAL HISTORIES PROJECT
Mayor Houlihan introduced Kristi Hawthorne, President of the Oceanside Historical Society,
indicating that Ms. Hawthorne had been hired by the Hwy 101 Association to coordinate the
Highway 101 Oral Histories Project.
Kristi Hawthorne presented an overview of the Oral Histories Project stating that the goal of the
project was to gather and collect stories and recollections from individuals who have had first hand
~ experience with the Hwy 101 historic route. As the coordinator, she would be the main contact
person for the project, and would organize the interviewees and interviewers. Ms. Hawthorne

indicated that she would be available for training the interviewers and would provide guidelines and ,
interview questions. Once the interviews were completed, she would assist with the transcription of
the oral histories.
Ms. Hawthorne indicated that the process for the oral histories project consisted of the following
steps:
■ Identify and train the interviewers (interviewer training would take place on Thursday,
September 16, 2004 at the Old School House located at 4th and F Streets).
■ Submit a Press Release to the community (with the purpose to publicize the project and locate
potential interviewees).
■ Identify potential interviewees and assign to interviewers.
■ Record (on micro-cassette) the interviews (interviews should be done at their home or where
they are most comfortable whenever possible).
■ Photograph interviewees (with digital camera) at the time of the interview.
■ Transcribe the interviews and return to interviewees for review and accuracy.
■ Select the oral histories to be included in the project.
Mayor Houlihan and Peder Norby, Executive Director of the Downtown Encinitas MainStreet
Association, would assist Ms. Hawthorne with the Press Release. Sub-committee member Lloyd
O'Connell would be listed on the Press Release as the contact person. His contact information
would be listed as: ilooffice(~~cox.net or 760-753-5726.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Jan Grice announced that the mission bell located at Pacific Elementary School would be moved to
the Old School House with the help of an Eagle Scout.
