2003-04-03 CITY OF ENCINITAS ACTION MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CULTURAL TOURISM COMIVIITTEE April 3, 2003 Present: Deputy Mayor Maggie Houlihan, Council Member Dan Dalager, City Manager Kerry Miller, Management Intern Arlene Rosado, Peder Norby, Paul Davis, )ohn Mclssac, Sherry Smoot, Sherry Hamilton, Chuck Ades, Jim Clark, Lorna Martin, Edger Engert, Michael Lummel, Nan Sterman, Donna Newson, and Trenda Stennett DIRECTION/ACTION Call to Order and Announcements Council Member Houlihan called the meeting to order at 8:40 a.m. Self-introductions were made. Deputy Mayor Houlihan announced that there will be two brief presentations: Michael Lununel and Donna Newson with Directories and Maps, USA gave a presentation on the Community Profile Guide that they are working on for the Encinitas Visitors Center. Once completed, the guide can be used for tourism, business development, and future residents since it will contain information items such as the local businesses, churches, schools, transit, tourism activities, and community events. Trenda Stennett with Info Board Systems gave a presentation on the information board that was placed at the Encinitas Visitors Center yesterday. The board serves as a restaurant, hotel, and activity guide, 24 hours a day. It is paid for by advertisers at no cost to the visitor's center. The board is limited to 30 spaces. Visitors are able to dial up the advertising business directly through the telephone system incorporated into the board. This will enable the visitor to contact the business they are interested in and get any specific information that they need. The sub-committees were reported on as follows: Reports from the Sub-Committee Chairpersons Along the El Camino Real - Carolyn Cope was not able to attend the meeting; however, she indicated prior to this meeting that the sub-committee is awaiting the city's response to the meeting they had with sta.ff regarding size, locations, and amount of bells suitable for the El Cainino Real corridar. Council Member Dan Dalager displayed a toy bell that he had borrowed from a local resident. The toy bell is a replica of the original mission bells used along El Camino Real and they were sold to help with funding. Reports from the Sub-Committee Chairpersons . Enhancement of the VisitoYS Center - Sherry Hamilton reported that renovations have fcontinued) begun. Don Parent has reorganized the storage closed and renovated the restroom. The main renovations will begin shortly. • The VisitoY/Economic Impact and Demand Sur-vey/Study - Peder Norby reported that the questionnaire has been compiled. DEMA believes that the best time to do the survey is in the summer time. • Cultural Tours - Nan Sterman reported that the tour will be of private gardens within the local community. Before she begins the planning process, Ms. Sterman indicated that she , will be in contact with other individuals who have already done a tour and obtain their input. Deputy Mayor Houlihan noted that Carolyn Cope and Evelyn Weidner have volunteered to assist Ms. Sterman with this project; however, additional volunteers are needed. Chuck Ades and Sherry Smoot offered their assistance. • History Without Walls - Deputy Mayor Houlihan reported that the group has put out a press release for the April 29, 2003 Historical Preservation Workshop. She also noted that the next meeting will take place on May 27t'. The group is also working on creating a webpage that will eventually include a database of various historical items and the item's location. • AYtwork to the RaiL Bridge - Peder Norby reported that this project is in the works. He also noted that work is being done on the Noah's Ark recreation project. • America in Bloom - Chuck Ades reported that this project is underway. Edger Engert will head the project with the assistance of the Management Intern Arlene Rosado. Mr. Engert noted that there are many projects within the city that are already completed that would be suitable for the competition. • Historic 101 Marketing - Peder Norby reported that they are about two months away from the completion of their first project, which is a brochure. He indicated that the brochure will not be a typical marketing brochure. It will be very modern and will show that Hwy 101 has value and is very active. Mr. Norby also mentioned that the Travel West Magazine featured the north county corridor (Oceanside to Encinitas) of Hwy 101 in their last publication. Lastly, a publication entitled "Lifestyles" is doing a feature for the next two months on Hwy 101. • Hwy 101 Southern Entrance Project - No report given. Oral Communications None. Discussion of Future Agenda Items 1) Sub-committee reports. 2) Update on the city parks, including Cottonwood Creek, by the Parks and Recreation Director. Next Regular Meeting The May lst meeting is cancelled due to calendar conflict with the Mayors' Prayer Breakfast. The next meeting is June 5, 2003.
