2002-12-05 CITY OF ENCINITAS ACTION MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CULTURAL TOURISM COMMTTEE December 5, 2002 Present: Council Member Maggie Houlihan, City Manager Kerry Miller, Peder Norby, Paul Davis, John Mclssac, Carolyn Cope, Cyd Shaw, Julian Duval, Joe Koch, Arlene Betti, Sherry Smoot, Sherry Hamilton, Kirsten Richter, and Audrey Goldschmidt. DIRECTION/ACTION Call to Order Council Member Houlihan called the meeting to order at 8:11 a.m. and self-introductions were made. The following announcements were made: Sherry Smoot/Encinitas Visitors Center indicated that the volunteers axe going through "The Wow Initiative" training program. The training program is design to train individuals in excellent customer service specifically geared toward the San Diego region based information and knowledge. Ms. Smoot also announced that the Visitors Center has updated their lodging guide. Sherry Hamilton/Encinitas Chamber of Commerce announced that the Chamber of Commerce is working on advertising in the 2003 edition of the San Diegan Magazine. ( She also indicated that the Encinitas Quality of Life brochure is in the works. The brochure will be a great fonun for advertising the City as well as local businesses. The brochure will be able to serve as a visitors guide and relocation guide all in one. Julian DuvaUQuail Botanical Gardens announced that the Council has now approved the lease agreement for the gardens. He also noted that the Annual Garden of Lights celebration starts on December 8t'. Council Member Houlihan announced that she represented the City in the Annual Mother Goose Parade on November 22nd. She noted that it was good advertising for the Encinitas hostelry businesses. Update on the Sub-Committees The following sub-committees gave reports as follows: • EZ Camino Real Banner Program - Arlene Betti reported that Rob Blough, the traffic engineer for the City, is looking at tentative locations, the size, and the number of bells for the El Camino Real corridor. • VisitoYS CenteY Referral Sef vice and Enhancement of the Visitors Center - Julian Duval reported that the Referral Service is pretty much complete. The center updates the referral list on a regular basis. Mr: Duval indicated that regarding the "Bnhancement of the Visitors Update on the Sub-Committee (continued) Center" he would like to get assistance from Council Member Houlihan and/or Assistant to the City Manager Richard Phillips and would like them to attend the next Chamber meeting. - • Cultural Tours - There was no report of this item. • The Visitor/Economic Impact and Demand Survey/Study - There was no report on this item. • The Cultural Tours - There was no report on this item. • PYeservation of the History of Encinitas - Council Member Houlihan gave a brief report indicating that the subcommittee held their first meeting last month and it went very well. At the meeting the subcommittee was renamed as "History without Walls The subcommittee developed some goals. The next meeting will take place in the early spring. Discussion of Future Agenda Items 1) Goal Setting.
