2008-05-23 CITY OF ENCINITAS SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION MINUTES Meeting Date: May 23, 2008, 1:00 PM 1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL The meeting was called to order at 1:00 PM. Present: Commissioners Finch, Larson, Price and Winfield Also Present: Recreation Superintendent Fazzio and Senior Management Analyst Stauffer Absent: Commissioners Vance, Drielsma and Harp 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE 3. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None 4. CHANGES TO AGENDA None 5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF CONSENT CALENDAR A. Approval of Minutes for the April 25, 2008 Regular Meeting. COMMISSIONER WINFIELD MOTIONED AND COMMISSIONER PRICE SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE APRIL 25, 2008 REGULAR MEETING. THE MOTION WAS APPROVED 4-0. 6. PRESENTATIONS None 7. OLD BUSINESS A. Status Report on Project C.A.R.E. Superintendent Fazzio provided handouts. There were 72 new clients for a total of 596 clients for the year to date. Most of the new clients are from High Country Villas. 1 B. Status Report on Senior Center Superintendent Fazzio reported on the new Senior Services Directory. There will be a Wii tournament on May 27, a Health and Fitness Day walk on May 28 th and the 6 annual Inter-Generational Recital on June 6. A new class, “Sing for Your Life” starts June 6. Results from the Senior Nutrition Program survey were provided. C. Update Report on Ad Hoc Sub-Committees. (Outreach Information, Senior Housing Review, Senior Disaster Preparedness and Representative Reports) Outreach – Commissioner Price reported on her volunteer outreach efforts with Russian seniors. Senior Housing – No Report Senior Disaster Preparedness – Commissioner Finch reported on the disaster preparedness plan and asked to discuss ways to better distribute the information. Commissioner Winfield asked about fire extinguisher training. Superintendent Fazzio will check into training opportunities and report back to the Commission. Representative Reports – Commissioner Finch reported on the Older Americans Month presentation that was made to City Council. AIS – Superintendent Fazzio referred Commissioners to the agenda report. D. Review of 2008 Senior Information Fair Commissioner Larson commented on the Senior Information Fair and Carl’s Fitness. Commissioner Finch also commented on the Senior Information Fair and reported that it was well received. Commissioners discussed the need for healthier refreshments and snacks next year and suggested raising the booth prices to help pay for them. Commissioners discussed the need to provide more input into planning the event. Superintendent Fazzio suggested that a Commission Subcommittee meet with the Recreation Supervisor planning the event for next THERE WAS COMMISSION CONSENSUS TO AGENDIZE FOR year. DISCUSSION ESTABLISHING THE SENIOR INFORMATION FAIR SUBCOMMITTEE DURING THE SEPTEMBER MEETING. 8. NEW BUSINESS A. Reschedule of June 20, 2008 Meeting Superintendent Fazzio asked that the Recreation Facility Tour scheduled for June thth 20 be moved to June 19 to better accommodate schedules. The tour will be from 11am – 2pm. 2 COMMISSIONER LARSON MOTIONED AND COMMISSIONER WINFIELD SECONDED TO CANCEL THE MEETING SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 20, 2008. MOTION WAS APPROVED 4-0. COMMISSIONER WINFIELD MOTIONED AND COMMISSIONER LARSON SECONDED TO RESCHEDULE THE MEETING TO JUNE 19, 2008 FROM 11AM – 2PM. MOTION WAS APPOVED 4-0. 9. COMMISSIONER’S CORNER/ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Commissioners – Commissioner Winfield spoke on the community grant review committee. Commissioner Price reported on her trip to Boston. Commissioner Finch asked to agendize for discussion creating a mission statement. B. Staff- Superintendent Fazzio provided a copy of the Senior DVD presentation for Commissioners to review and provide comments. Commissioner Drielsma will be back in September. 10.
