2008-04-02 CITY OF ENCINITAS YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES MEETING DATE: April 2, 2008 4:30 P.M. 1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL Present: Chairperson Michelle Ferreirae, Campbell, Felzer, Nick Ferreirae, Ogden, Lawson, Novack and Marow. Also Present: Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein and Administrative Coordinator Dakovich. Absent: Vice Chairperson Sherif and Commissioner Prieto 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE 3. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None 4. CHANGES TO THE AGENDA None 5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF THE CONSENT CALENDAR A. Approval of Minutes for Meeting of March 5, 2008. COMMISSIONER FELZER MOVED, COMMISSIONER MAROW SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE MARCH 5, 2008 MEETING. MOTION CARRIED 8-0. 6. PRESENTATIONS A. San Diego Sheriff’s Department – Deputy David Toner Chairperson Ferreirae reviewed the staff report and introduced San Diego Sheriff’s Department Deputy David Toner. Deputy Toner distributed information on the Deputy Explorer Program, operated by the San Diego Sheriff’s Department and gave a brief overview of the program and the various assignments . At the conclusion of his presentation he asked for questions. Chairperson Michelle Ferreirae asked how many participants in North County. Deputy Toner responded there are currently 15-20 participants, but Explorer recruitment is in full swing to interest more participants. Commissioner Novack asked how assignments were determined. Deputy Toner advised assignments are based on rank and need. An Explorer would serve 20 hours per month, or two ten hour shifts, and would determine the hours and days of the week to participate. Chairperson Michelle Ferreirae and the Commission members thanked Deputy Toner for the presentation. 7. OLD BUSINESS A. Encinitas Community Library tour comments. Chairperson Ferreirae reviewed the staff report and requested Commissioners provide comments on the tour and suggestions for teen programming at the Library. Commissioner Ogden suggested a teen tutoring program for children. Commissioner Novack suggested teen reading program with children. Commissioner Marow suggested a teen employment opportunities job board. Chairperson Michelle Ferreirae suggested that study rooms be reservable and used for group studying . She also suggested the possibility of the Youth Commission holding a meeting at the library and in consensus the Commission agreed. 8. NEW BUSINESS None. 9. COMMISSIONER’S CORNER A. Commissioners Commissioner Novack enjoyed the recent Teen EXPO/Career Days at San Dieguito Academy and suggested the need for more local business booths with employment opportunities. Chairperson Michelle Ferreirae noted the upcoming Intergenerational Dinner, at the Community and Senior Center, June 3 at 6 p.m. and the need for representatives of the Youth Commission to attend and emcee the event. Commissioners Novack, Marow and Chairperson Michelle Ferreirae will attend. She also noted the upcoming Teen Movie Fun Night, April 25 and requested Commissioners review movie list handout and suggest movies to be shown. She distributed flyers for the upcoming Teen EXPO at La Costa Canyon High School and the 5K/1K Run/Walk, May 17, at Moonlight Beach. Commissioner Ogden noted the upcoming La Costa Canyon High School Prom May 17, at the Promenade in San Diego, a masquerade “Under the Stars” theme. Commissioner Novack gave a brief update on the San Dieguito Academy debate teams. Commissioner Lawson noted the upcoming Talent Show at Oakcrest Middle School. Commissioner Felzer noted the San Dieguito Academy Prom, May 17, on the Hornblower Ship with a pirate theme. Commissioner Campbell noted the La Costa Canyon High School Prom May 17, and also the upcoming National Silence Day. Commissioner Marow noted the upcoming Talent Show at Oakcrest Middle School. Commissioner Nick Ferreirae advised that Spring Break begins next week at Diegueno Middle School. 10. ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 5:14 p.m. NEXT REGULAR MEETING: May 7, 2008
