MEETING MINUTES
MEETING DATE: March 7, 2007

1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
Chairperson Ferreirae called the meeting to order at 4:31 pm.
Present: Chairperson Ferreirae, Vice Chairperson Novack, Commissioners
Prieto, Vaccaro, Alcorn, Young, Stone, Lee, Ogden and Campbell.

Absent: Commissioner Felzer.

5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF THE CONSENT CALENDAR
A. Approval of Minutes for Meeting of February 7, 2007.
VICE CHAIRPERSON NOVACK MOVED, COMMISSIONER VACCARO
SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE FEBRUARY 7, 2007
MEETING. MOTION CARRIED 10-0.
6. PRESENTATIONS
None
7. OLD BUSINESS
A. Status Report on Current Youth/Teen Activities (Teen Trips, Open Gym,
Open MIC, etc.).
Chairperson Ferreirae noted the upcoming Teen EXPO's to be held March 28 at
San Dieguito Academy and April 4 at La Costa Canyon High School and the
Summer Teen Trips to Magic Mountain and Universal Studios. She also
distributed flyers for Open Mic, March 16, Open Gym, April 7 and the Easter Egg
Hunt Festival, April 7.
8. NEW BUSINESS
A. Status Report on Encinitas Environment Day, June 2007
Chairperson Ferreirae reviewed the staff report and introduced and welcomed
John Gjata, Parks and Recreation Commissioner, spokesperson for the
upcoming Encinitas Environment Day, June 3, 2007.
John Gjata distributed a brochure on Encinitas Environment Day that addressed
youth volunteer opportunities. He emphasized the importance of having
environment awareness and encouraged Commission members to promote the
event at their schools, with their teachers, families and friends. He reviewed
various volunteer opportunities including helping set-up/tear down, traffic
management, booth assistance, etc.
Michelle Little, spokesperson for Encinitas Environment Day, noted she will
participate in Earth Day, April 21 in Balboa Park, as director of the children's
parade. She also advised that Encinitas Environment Day is held on the same
day as United Nations Environment Day and encouraged youth participation.
Chairperson Ferreirae opened the meeting to questions.
Commissioner Ogden confirmed that the event will be held at Cottonwood Creek
Park.
Commissioner Young confirmed the date of June 3, 2007.
John Gjata advised the event will be North County oriented and noted there are
two environmental companies interested in participating.
Vice Chairperson Novack asked why the City was not participating in United
Nations Environment Day.
John Gjata noted Encinitas is very environment oriented and citizens wanted
their own celebration. He also advised students would receive community
service credits for their efforts.
Commissioner Prieto noted he was interested in helping set up a web site.
Michelle Little thanked Commissioner Prieto and will discuss with him further.
She also applauded the Commission for their efforts and encouraged their
participation in the event.
John Gjata encouraged Commission members to volunteer and enlist others to
participate. He noted the volunteer response form in the brochure, as well as
the e-mail address and telephone number for further information.
Commissioner Ogden suggested that a beach cleanup be held in conjunction
with Encinitas Environment Day.
Chairperson Ferreirae and the Commission thanked Michelle Little and John
Gjata for the information.
9. COMMISSIONERS CORNER
A. COMMISSIONERS:
Commissioner Lee noted upcoming AP tests at La Costa Canyon High School.
Commissioner Alcorn noted the upcoming La Costa Canyon High School "Club
Extravaganza" to promote school clubs.
Commissioner Prieto advised that the La Costa Canyon High School ASB was
sponsoring an "American Idol" Air Band Contest on March 15, 2007.
B. STAFF
Management Analyst Stauffer reviewed the upcoming (July 26 to August 7, 2007)
Sister City Student Exchange Program and distributed applications to
Commission members.

The meeting adjourned at 4:55 p.m.
