2005-01-05 a CITY OF ENCINITAS YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES MEETING DATE: November 2, 2005 4:30 P.M. 1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL Chairperson Berry-Blum called the meeting to order at 4:33 pm. Present: Chairperson Berry-Blum, Vice Chairperson Prieto, Commissioners Felzer, Ferreirae, Ogden, Vaccaro, and Canchola (4:40). Also Present: Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein and Administrative Coordinator Dakovich Absent: Commissioners Alcorn, Lee, and Micelli. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE 3. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None 4. CHANGES TO THE AGENDA None 5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF THE CONSENT CALENDAR A. Approval of Minutes for Meeting of October 5, 2005. COMMISSIONER FELZER MOVED, COMMISSIONER FERREIRAE SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 5, 2005 MEETING. MOTION CARRIED 7-0. 6. PRESENTATIONS A. Encinitas Recreation Programs Video Chairperson Berry-Blum reviewed the staff report and noted that Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein would present the Recreation Programs Video. 7. OLD BUSINESS A. Status Report on Current YouthlTeen Activities (Teen Trips, Open Gym, Open MIC, etc.). Chairperson Berry-Blum noted that Open Gym would be held November 5 and November 19, and Open Mic would be held November 18. She further advised that neither program would be offered in December. B. Commission Subcommittee Reports. No Subcommittee meetings were held during the month of October. 8. NEW BUSINESS A. Tour of Encinitas Community & Senior Center Chairperson Berry-Blum reviewed the staff report and introduced Craig Harris, Center Facility Attendant, who will conduct the Center tour. The Commission began their Center Tour at 4:45 PM and returned at 5:20 PM. 9. COMMISSIONERS CORNER A. Commissioners Chairperson Berry Blum advised that "Battle of the Bands" was coming to San Dieguito Academy next week. Vice Chairperson Prieto will follow up with bands as possible presenters during Open Mic nights. Commissioner Ogden reported that Diegueno Middle School would be holding a food drive next week in conjunction with the Community Resource Center to provide Thanksgiving meals for needy families. Commissioner Ferreirae noted the upcoming San Dieguito Academy Community Day November 16. Commissioner Canchola reported that San Dieguito Academy was holding an "A11 Come Together" program where students would have an opportunity to visit classrooms, other than their own, and meet new students. Commissioner Vaccaro asked if the Commission would participate in the upcoming Encinitas Christmas Parade. Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein advised there were no plans for the Commission to participate in the Parade, however, suggested the possibility that Commission members could attend as volunteers and asked those interested to contact her office for further information. Vice Chairperson Prieto advised that La Costa Canyon High School would be showing "Pirates of the Caribbean" at their Movie in the Meadow program this week. He also noted that "Survivor Week" would begin November 7, with La Costa Canyon High School and Torrey Pines High School competing for prizes. Chairperson Berry-Blum distributed the Winter Recreation Brochure and flyers on various upcoming teen programs and events, and encouraged Commission members to promote these activities to their friends and attend them as well. B. Staff Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein advised that traditionally the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson act as judges during the Christmas Parade on December 3 from 4-7 PM. She suggested that the Chair and Vice Chair check their calendars and advise her if they are available. She also noted the new Parks & Recreation Department logo, which will be used on flyers, t-shirts, etc. 10.
