MEETING MINUTES
MEETING DATE: June 1, 2005

1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
Chairperson Briana Meyer called the meeting to order at 4:34 pm.
Present: Chairperson Meyer, Commissioners Alcorn, Berry-Blum, Canchola,
Felzer, Ferreirae, Micelli, Ogden, Prieto, and Vaccaro.

5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF THE CONSENT CALENDAR
A. Approval of Minutes for Meeting of May 4, 2005.
COMMISSIONER FELZER MOVED, COMMISSIONER FERREIRAE
SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE MAY 4, 2005 MEETING.
MOTION CARRIED 5-0.
6. PRESENTATIONS
A. Welcome New Youth Commission Members.
Chairperson Meyer welcomed the new Commission members and asked that
they give their name, school, and major interest.
Commissioner Ogden - 7th Grade Diegueno, shopping
Commissioner Alcorn -10th Grade La Costa Canyon, soccer, field hockey, track
Commissioner Felzer - 8th Grade Diegueno, drawing
Commissioner Vaccaro -11'h Grade San Dieguito Academy, movies

Commissioner Berry-Blum -11th Grade, San Dieguifo Academy, dance
Commissioner Micelli - 7th Grade Oakcrest, softball

B. Recognition of Outgoing Youth Commission Members.
Chairperson Meyer presented the outgoing Commissioners with a certificate of
appreciation for their efforts on the Youth Commission. Those receiving
certificates included Drew Bangert, Kylle Groseclose, Jazmin Machado, and
Briana Meyer. Certificates will be mailed to Nadine Vasquez and Lana Royer.
7. OLD BUSINESS
A. Status Report on Current Youth/Teen Activities (Teen Trips, Open Gym,
Open MIC, etc.).
Chairperson Meyer reported that Open Gym will be held June 4 and Open Mic
will be held July 15 at the Community Center. Teen Trips include Magic
Mountain July 14 and Universal Studios August 11. She also noted upcoming
Golf Clinics, Pet First Aid Class, and a Baby Sitting Class. She encouraged
Commissioners to support and attend events, and suggested they pick up flyers,
promoting the programs, after the meeting for distribution to their school and
friends.
8. NEW BUSINESS
A. Review of Park Tour and Summer Meeting Options.
Chairperson Meyer reviewed the staff report and opened the meeting to
discussion on possible July and/or August meeting dates as well as park tour.
There was a brief discussion by the Commission and a determination was made.
COMMISSIONER PRIETO MOVED, COMMISSIONER FELZER SECONDED
TO CANCEL JULY AND AUGUST COMMISSION MEETINGS AND PLAN A
PARK TOUR IN SEPTEMBER OR EARLIEST DATE AVAILABLE AFTER THE
SCHOOL YEAR STARTS. MOTION CARRIED. 10-0.
Chairperson Meyer advised the next Youth Commission meeting would be
September 7, 2005.
B. Election of Chairperson and Vice Chairperson.
Chairperson Meyer reviewed the staff report, noting the duties and
responsibilities of both the Chair and Vice Chairperson. She called for
nominations for Chairperson.
Commissioner Felzer nominated Commissioner Ferreirae, Commissioner Prieto
nominated himself, Commissioner Canchola nominated Commissioner Berry-
Blum. Candidates spoke briefiy about their background, experience and why
they would be a good choice for Chair of the Youth Commission.
Chairperson Meyer noted the vote would be a secret ballot, tallied by staff.
Chairperson Meyer announced that Commissioner Berry-Blum had been elected
Chairperson of the 2005-06 Youth Commission.
Chairperson Meyer called for nominations for Vice Chairperson.
Commissioner Felzer nominated himself, Commissioner Prieto nominated
himself, Commissioner Canchola nominated herself, and Commissioner Berry-
Blum nominated Commissioner Ferreirae. Candidates spoke briefly about their
background and experience.
Chairperson noted the vote would be a secret ballot, tallied by staff.
After a second ballot, due to a tie, Chairperson Meyer announced that
Commissioner Prieto had been elected Vice Chairperson of the 2005-06 Youth
Commission.
9. COMMISSIONERS CORNER
A. Commissioners
Chairperson Meyer emphasized the importance of ineeting attendance, arriving
promptly, reviewing the agenda before the meeting, leaving cell phones off, and
calling staff when unable to attend. She also noted that binders presented to
new Commissioners today would be reviewed at the next meeting.
Commissioner Ogden, who attends Diegueno, noted only 13 school days left
before the summer break.
Heather Alcorn noted the upcoming State Track Meet this weekend at La Costa
Canyon High SchooL
Commissioner Ferreirae noted the Aloha Dance, June 14 at Diegueno Middle
SchooL
Commissioner Canchola noted the upcoming Sat Test, June 4 and the Taste of
Encinitas tomorrow night downtown.
Commissioner Berry-Blum noted the San Dieguito Academy Exhibition Day is
June 2.
B. Staff
Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein distributed Commission member address and
phone list and requested any changes be addressed. She also thanked
Chairperson Meyer for all her efforts over the past several years.

Chairperson Meyer reminded the Commission they can make a difference,
makes things happen and remember you are the youth connection to City
Council.
10. ADJOURNMENT
The meeting adjourned at 5:15 p.m.
