2004-01-07 , CITY OF ENCINITAS YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES MEETING DATE: December 1, 2004 4:30 P.M. 1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL The meeting was called to order at 4:35 p.m. Present: Chairperson Briana Meyer, Vice Chairperson Nadine Vasquez, Commissioners Anthony Prieto, Mariah Ogden, Michelle Ferreirae, Drew Bangert, Lana Royer, Jazmin Machado, Soh-Yeon Lee, Kylle Groseclose and David Felzer. Also Present: Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein and Administrative Support Coordinator Dakovich. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE 3. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. 4. CHANGES TO THE AGENDA None. 5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF THE CONSENT CALENDAR A. Approval of Minutes for Meeting of November 3, 2004. COMMISSIONER FERREIRAE MOVED, COMMISSIONER FELZER SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE NOVEMBER 3, 2004 MEETING. MOTION CARRIED 11-0. 6. PRESENTATIONS None. 7. OLD BUSINESS A. Status Report on Current Youth/Teen Activities (Teen Trips, Open Gym, Open MIC, etc.) Chairperson Meyer distributed flyers on upcoming Teen Trips to Mountain High January 27; and Disneyland, February 18, and advised that both Open Mic and Open Gym would not be held in December, however, the dates for January were Open Gym - January 15 and Open Mic - January 21. B. Commission Subcommittee Reports. Teen Center Subcommittee - Chair Vasquez advised the Subcommittee did not meet in November, however, have meeting scheduled for December 11 at I p.m.. Skate Park Subcommittee - Chair Ogden advised no meeting was held in November, however, planned to schedule a December meeting. Transportation Subcommittee - Chair Bangert advised no meeting was held in November. Marketina Subcommittee - Chair Vasquez reported no meeting held in November, however, have scheduled meeting for December 11 at noon. C. Report on Youth Summit Planning Meeting - November 17, 2004. Chairperson Meyer advised that she, Vice Chairperson Vasquez, Commissioner Felzer and Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein attended the planning meeting on November 17 in Vista, and distributed notes from the meeting. She noted that cities were given various assignments for the upcoming San Diego Youth Conference, March 5, and Encinitas would be responsible for a speaker to discuss Youth in Government, as well as provide three raffle prizes (all cities to provide three raffle prizes). Vice Chairperson Vasquez noted that during the meeting a timeline was discussed as well as marketing strategies, topics for discussion and possible guest speakers. She advised the Conference would be held on March 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Guajome Park Academy in Vista. Commissioner Felzer noted attending the planning meeting was a good experience. 8. NEW BUSINESS None. 9. COMMISSIONERS CORNER A. Commissioners Chairperson Meyer encouraged members of the Marketing Subcommittee to work on obtaining raffle gifts fior the Conference. Commissioner Ogden advised she had an item she would like to contribute as a raffle prize. Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein advised she would provide a letter that could accompany the requests for raffle prizes that would include background on the Youth Summit and the Conference. 6 Chairperson Meyer also suggested that the Marketing Subcommittee promote the Youth Conference, encouraging teens to attend. Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein distributed Commission information to Commissioners that included monthly calendars, and Subcommittee and Commissioner lists. Chairperson Meyer distributed Holiday Parade and program flyers. Vice Chairperson Vasquez advised the Diegueno Middle School Senior Winter Dance would be held December 10 at Loma Santa Fe Country Club. Commissioner Bangert advised that La Costa Canyon High School Northern Lights Movie Night would be held December 16 at 7 p.m. Commissioner Felzer advised Diegueno Middle School Battle of the Bands would be held December 9 at 7:30 p.m. Commissioner Ferreirae advised that the winner of the Geography Beat, to be held December 8-9 at Diegueno Middle School would go to State finals. B. Staff Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein distributed Commission bags and sweatshirts to several Commission members. 10.
