YOUTH COMMISSION
MEETING MINUTES
MEETING DATE: September 1, 2004

1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
The meeting was called to order at 4:42 p.m.
Present: Chairperson Briana Meyer, Vice Chairperson Nadine Vasquez,
Commissioners Anthony Prieto, Mariah Ogden, Michelle Ferreirae,
Soh-Yeon Lee, Drew Bangert and David Felzer
Also
Present: Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein and Administrative Support
Coordinator Dakovich.
Absent: Commissioners Jazmin Machado, Lana Royer and Kylle
Groseclose.

4. CHANGES TO THE AGENDA
Chairperson Meyer advised that during Presentations, Commission introductions
would be updated.
5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF THE CONSENT CALENDAR
A. Approval of Minutes for Meeting of August 10, 2004.
VICE CHAIRPERSON VASQUEZ MOVED, COMMISSIONER FELZER
SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE AUGUST 10, 2004
MEETING. MOTION CARRIED 8-0.
6. PRESENTATIONS
Chairperson Meyer reviewed Commission introductions - Chairperson Meyer,
11th Grade San Dieguito Academy, enjoys the beach and the Youth Commission;
Vice Chairperson Vasquez, 9th Grade Canyon Crest, enjoys softball;
Commissioner Ogden, 7th Grade Diegueno Middle School, enjoys soccer;
Commissioner Ferreirae, 8th Grade Diegueno Middle School, enjoys reading;
Commissioner Felzer 8th Grade Diegueno Middle School; Commissioner Lee, gtn
Grade La Costa Canyon High School, enjoys basketball; Commissioner Prieto,
9tn Grade La Costa Canyon High School, enjoys volleyball; Commissioner
Bangert, 12th Grade La Costa Canyon High School, enjoys cheerleading and
ASB.

7. OLD BUSINESS
A. Status Report on Current YouthlTeen Activities (Teen Trips, Open Gym,
Open MIC, etc.)
Chairperson Meyer noted several upcoming dates - Open Gym/Late Night Out,
September 18 at the Community Center; Open Mic, September 17 at the
Community Center, and teen trip to Knott's Scary Farm, October 9, cost -$45.
B. Review of Proposed Meeting Schedule.
Chairperson Meyer reviewed the staff report and the attachment, listing dates
and suggestions for future meetings. She requested that the Commission provide
additional suggestions for upcoming meetings.
The Commissioners suggested a City Hall Tour, a Community Center Tour, a
presentation by NCTD, a City Library update, update on City government, update
on the Hall property and it was also determined that the Commission meet in
December, traditionally a dark month for most Commissions.
Chairperson Meyer thanked the Commissioners for their input and noted that all
suggestions would be taken into consideration and scheduled time permitting.
8. NEW BUSINESS
A. Review of Ad Hoc Subcommittee Functions an.d Appoint Members to Ad
Hoc Subcommittees.
Chairperson Meyer reviewed the staff report and appointed the following
Commissioners to the Ad Hoc Subcommittees:

Chairperson Meyer encouraged each Subcommittee to meet during the month,
elect a Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, review their goals and objectives and
be prepared to report information on that meeting at the October Youth
Commission meeting.
9. COMMISSIONERS CORNER
A. Commissioners
Chairperson Meyer noted the upcoming Encinitas Day, October 2 and
encouraged Commission members to volunteer. She also distributed a list for
Commission sweatshirt sizes and an invitation to attend UCSD "Encinitas Night"
at the women's volleyball match between UCSD and Cal State Monterey Bay
(tickets available through Parks & Recreation Director Phil Cotton). She also
noted the upcoming Commission Recognition Dinner, September 20 and the
need to RSVP as soon as possible and reminded Commissioners, if attending, to
wear their nametags. She thanked Vice Chairperson Vasquez for a job well
done and Commissioners Ogden, Ferreirae, Lee and Machado for their support
during the recent City Council meeting, where Commission recommendations for
the Hall property were presented.
Commissioner Ogden noted Picture Day at Diegueno Middle School, September
16.
Commissioner Ferreirae advised dance to be held September 28 at Diegueno
Middle SchooL
Commissioner Prieto noted back to school Dance, La Costa Canyon High
School, September 17.
Commissioner Bangert advised homecoming at La Costa Canyon High School
will be October 14.
Commissioner Felzer noted upcoming beach cleanup, Moonlight Beach on
September 18.
Commissioner Lee advised the La Costa Canyon High School Concert Band
would be performing December 15.
10. ADJOURNMENT
The meeting adjourned at 5:46 p.m.
