YOUTH COMMISSION
MEETING MINUTES
MEETING DATE: February 5, 2003
4:30 PM.
1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
The meeting was called to order at 4:36 p.m.
Present:
Vice Chairperson Briana Meyer, Commissioners Tom Joseph,
Kiara Porter, Anthony Prieto, James Ebentier, Kristy Schaubel,
Nadine Vasquez, Hayley Crickmore, David Felzer, Ziggy Longdon,
Shane Wilson and Dan Leeper.
Also
Present:
Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein and Administrative Support
Coordinator Dakovich.
Absent:
Chairperson Summer Meyer

3. CHANGES TO THE AGENDA
None.
4. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Michael Callies, 968 Capri Road (representing the City of Encinitas Parks &
Recreation Commission) spoke on the need for more community skateboard
sites and inquired as to how the Parks and Recreation Commission could assist
the Youth Commission in this endeavor. He noted that Mike King, owner of
King's Rails had recently set up temporary skateboard facilities in several local
parking lots to promote sales as well as give skateboarders an opportunity to use
his equipment, however, there was no permanent site for this set-up.
Vice Chairperson Meyer thanked Commissioner Callies for his comments.
Commissioner Joseph suggested the possibility of the City and Mike King
working together to develop a site for skateboarders.
Commissioner Porter suggested that this topic be forwarded to the Skateboard
Sub-committee for further discussion.
5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF THE CONSENT CALENDAR
A. Approval of Minutes for Meeting of January 8,2003.
COMMISSIONER JOSEPH MOVED, COMMISSIONER LONG DON
SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE JANUARY 8, 2003, WITH
THE FOLLOWING CORRECTION "DAVID FELZER WAS PRESENT AT THE
JANUARY 8, 2003 MEETING. MOTION CARRIED 12-0.
6. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
None.
7. OLD BUSINESS
A. Status Report on Current Youthrreen Activities (Teen Trips, Open Gym,
Open Mic, etc.)
Vice Chairperson Meyer reported on upcoming teen programs including Golf
Clinics and Phat Films and encouraged Commission members to sign up as a
Judge or MC for the Phat Films performance March 13. She noted several
upcoming Teen Trips - Mountain High and Laser Tag, as well as upcoming Teen
Late Night Out January 18 and Open Mic February 21. She distributed flyers on
these and other activities/programs.
B. Status Report on Commissioner Subcommittees
· Skate Feature Subcommittee - Subcommittee Vice Chairperson Porter
advised that the Subcommittee needed to meet and set goals for the current
year and would provide that information at the March meeting.
· Elementary Age Issues Subcommittee - no report.
· Teen Center Subcommittee - no report. Chairperson Leeper will contact the
Subcommittee and arrange a meeting in the upcoming month.
· Transportation Subcommittee - Chairperson Crickmore will contact the
Subcommittee and schedule a meeting before the next Youth Commission
meeting.
· Marketing Subcommittee - Chairperson Joseph presented the Subcommittee
goals to Vice Chairperson Meyer.
8. NEW BUSINESS
None.
9. GENERAL INFORMATION/STAFF STATUS REPORTS
None.
10. COMMISSIONERS CORNER
A. Commissioners
Vice Chairperson Meyer reported on the recent San Diego Youth Commission
Workshop she and Chairperson Meyer attended at Mission Trails Park in San
Diego. She also distributed the last Teen Directory to each Commission member
and requested they review, update, and bring to the March meeting.
Commissioner Schau bel suggested that public access be provided over the
railroad tracks between Leucadia Blvd. And La Costa Avenue, to access the
beach.
Recreation Superintendent Rubenstein advised she would research this request
and bring information to the next meeting.
Commissioner Prieto noted that San Dieguito Academy would hold a school
dance on February 13 from 6-8 p.m. in Cougar Hall.
B. Staff
Recreation Supervisor Rubenstein noted that a Northern California Youth
Commission had sent an information survey to be filled out and returned.
