MEETING MINUTES

1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
The meeting was called to order at 4:40 p.m.

4. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF THE CONSENT CALENDAR
A. Approval of Minutes for Meeting of June 5, 2002
COMMISSIONER KIARA PORTER MOTIONED AND COMMISSIONER
BRIANA MEYER SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES. MOTION WAS
APPROVED 5-0.
5. PRESENTATIONS
A. Youth Commission Program - "Phat Films" - Award
Phat Films awards were presented to Jaz Merice and Curtis Clave. Each
received a $250 scholarship from Supervisor Pam Slater's office.

7. OLD BUSINESS
A. Status Report on Current YouthfTeen Activities (pHAT Films, Teen Trips,
Open Gym, Open Mic, etc.)
Chair Summer Meyer reported that Open Gym will be August 17 and that the
September 6 Open Gym has been cancelled. Open Mic will be August 16 at the
Community Center and the Teen Trip to Magic Mountain will be August 13.
B. Status Report on Commissioner Subcommittees
. Skate Features Subcommittee - Summer Meyer, Chair
Chair Summer Meyer reported that the ribbon cutting for Leucadia Oaks Park
was July 17 and that the skate feature is well used.
. Elementary Age Issues Subcommittee - Kiara Porter, Chair
Commissioner Kiara Porter reported that surveys will be distributed next
school year.
. Teen Center Subcommittee - Vacant, Chair
No report
. Transportation Subcommittee - Briana Meyer, Chair
No report
8. NEW BUSINESS
A. Election of Commission Chair and Vice Chair
CONSENSUS WAS REACHED TO HOLD THE ELECTION. Commissioners
Summer Meyer and Kiara Porter were nominated for Chair.
COMMISSIONER SUMMER MEYER WAS ELECTED CHAIR OF THE
COMMISSION.
Commissioners Kiara Porter, Dan Leeper, Briana Meyer, Anthony Prieto, and
Tom Joseph were nominated for Vice Chair.
COMMISSIONER BRIANA MEYER WAS ELECTED VICE CHAIR OF THE
COMMISSION.
B. Recognition of Outgoing Youth Commission Members
Former Commissioners Lindsay Dubois, Aaron Frumin, Jed Goldstein, Tre
Guerin, and Shane Wilson were all recognized for their contributions to the Youth
Commission.

C. Discussion on Attendance at League of California Cities, Long Beach
Chair Summer Meyer reported that the conference date emphasizing youth
would be Thursday, October 3, 2002. Commissioners Kiara Porter, Summer
Meyer, Briana Meyer, and Dan Leeper expressed interest in attending the
conference.
9. GENERAL INFORMATION/STAFF STATUS REPORTS
None
10. COMMISSIONERS CORNER
A. Commissioners
Chair Summer Meyer reported that the mural in the teen game room at the
Community Center is almost complete and that the ribbon cutting will follow.
CONSENSUS WAS REACHED TO HOLD THE NEXT REGULAR MEETING AT
THE COMMUNITY CENTER.
The annual Commission Recognition dinner will be September 23 at the
Community Center. Chair Summer Meyer also reported that she attended the
Hall Property workshop with City Council and recommended that the teen center,
an aquatic center, and skate features be included on the site. Council supported
these concepts.
B. Staff
Flyers for various activities were passed out.
