YOUTH COMMISSION
MEETING MINUTES
MEETING DATE: May 1, 2002

1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
The meeting was called to order at 4:30 p.m.
Present:
Chairperson Summer Meyer, Vice Chairperson Kiara Porter and
Commissioners Briana Meyer, Dan Leeper, Jed Goldstein, Lindsay
Dubois, Ziggy Longdon, Tre Guerin, Tom Joseph, Aaron Frumin
and Anthony Prieto.
Also
Present:
Recreation Coordinator Rubenstein and Administrative Secretary
Dakovich.
Absent:
Commissioner Shane Wilson.

Chairperson Meyer noted that Item 4 should be removed.

5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF THE CONSENT CALENDAR
A. Approval of Minutes for Meeting of March 6, 2002.
COMMISSIONER GOLDSTEIN MOVED, COMMISSIONER LEEPER
SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE MARCH 6, 2002
MEETING. MOTION APPROVED 11-0.
6. PRESENTATIONS
Recreation Coordinator Rubenstein introduced Jacklyn Dakovich, Administrative
Secretary, who will be replacing Management Assistant Stauffer and attending
the Youth Commission meetings.
7. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
None.

8. OLD BUSINESS
A. Status Report on Current YouthlTeen Activities (pHAT Films, Teen Trips,
Open Gym, Open Mic, etc.)
Chairperson Meyer noted that Phat Films would resume in the Fall; Open Mic
would be held at the Community Center, May 17 and continue the 3rd Friday of
the month through the Summer; Open Gym would be held the 1st and 3rd
Saturday nights through the Summer. She also advised that the deadline to
submit applications for the Youth Commission had been extended.
B. Status Report on Commissioner Subcommittees
. Skate Features Subcommittee - Summer Meyer, Chair
No report.
. Elementary Age Issues Subcommittee - Kiara Porter, Chair
Vice Chairperson Porter reported that the 6th Grade Forum was successful.
There was a small group that participated and good information was provided
on 6th grade youth related issues.
. Teen Center Subcommittee - Aaron Frumin, Chair
Commissioner Frumin distributed the City invitation to the Site Tour/Design
workshop for the Hall Property and encouraged all Commission members to
attend. He noted this was an opportunity to view the site and express the
need for a Teen Center.
. Transportation Subcommittee - Briana Meyer, Chair
Commissioner Meyer reported that Commissioner Dubois had written a letter
to North County Transit District (NCTD) thanking them for their recent
presentation to the Commission and made several suggestions for improved
teen service. This correspondence was reviewed by both the Subcommittee
and Commission prior to being mailed.

10. GENERAL INFORMATION/STAFF STATUS REPORTS

11. COMMISSIONERS CORNER
A. Commissioners
Commissioner Porter reported she had recently written an article for the school
paper on the need for a Teen Center, which included an interview with

Commissioner Frumin, Teen Center Subcommittee Chair. She will provide
copies for the Commission.
Chairperson Meyer noted that the San Dieguito Academy Prom would be held at
the Grand Horton Hotel this year on June 1. She also noted La Costa Canyon
High School would be holding their prom on the same date.
Commissioner Frumin reported on several upcoming events at La Costa Canyon
High School.
Chairperson Meyer referred the Commission to the artwork created by Marc
Allen for the Community Center Youth/Teen Game Room wall and encouraged
comments. The Commission made several suggestions regarding the mural's
perspective, ocean shades, which will be passed on to Marc Allen. Overall the
Commission is very pleased with the mural.
B. Staff
Recreation Coordinator Rubenstein encouraged Commission members to
contact 6th, th, and 8th grade students who may be interested in the Youth
Commission and encourage them to file an application. She also noted that
Commission applicants would be interviewed by City Council on May 22 and
appointed on June 12.
