MINUTES
MEETING DATE: September 5, 2001

1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
The Meeting was called to order at 4:35PM.
Present:
Commissioners Briana Meyer, Summer Meyer, Kiara Porter, Jed
Goldstein, Lindsay DuBois, Tre Guerin, Ziggy Longdon, Tom
Joseph, Aaron Frumin, and Dan Leeper
Absent:
Commissioners Shane Wilson and Anthony Prieto
Also Present: Recreation Coordinator Rubenstein, Management Assistant
Stauffer, and Recreation Superintendent Alexander

A. Approval of Minutes for Regular Meeting of August 1, 2001
COMMISSIONER LONGDON MOTIONED AND COMMISSIONER GOLDSTEIN
SECONDED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES. MOTION WAS APPROVED 10-0.
6. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
None
7. OLD BUSINESS
A. Status Report on Current Youthffeen Activities (PHAT Films, Teen Trips,
Teen Dance, etc.)
Chairperson Summer Meyer reported on the status of current youth/teen
activities. Pictures from the August 16, 2001 Dinner Nights Out were passed out.
The Teen Trip to Knott's Scary Farm will be October 13 and the Teen Trip to
Disneyland will be January 21. Open Mic and Open Gym will be held at the San
Dieguito Academy gym.
B. Status Report on Commissioner Subcommittees
Commissioners Guerin and Longdon joined the Elementary Age Subcommittee.
· Skate Features Subcommittee - Summer Meyer, Chair
No report.
· Elementary Age Issues Subcommittee - Kiara Porter, Chair
Chairperson Summer Meyer reported that there was discussion of a possible
name change for the subcommittee to better represent its purpose. The
Ordinance establishing the Youth Commission was reviewed and
Commissioners were reminded to keep in mind all elementary age youth
when discussing a new name for the subcommittee. Commissioners were
asked to think about a possible new name for the subcommittee and to make
recommendations at a later date. The next subcommittee meeting will be
September 13 at 4P.M. to discuss the development of the 6th grade forum.
Community Services staff will secure a meeting room.
· Teen Center Subcommittee - Aaron Frumin, Chair
Commissioner Frumin reported that the subcommittee discussed moving
some teen center activities to the new Community Center, The subcommittee
recommended that the Youth Commission utilize the new Community Center
as a temporary site for some teen activities until a permanent site is found.
The subcommittee also recommended that the Youth Commission continue to
work with city staff to develop programs and activities for the center, and have
Chairperson Summer Meyer send a memo to the City Council informing them
of the Commissions recommendations. Consensus was reached by the
Commission to accept the subcommittees recommendations. Community
Services staff will call subcommittee members for a meeting to review
program ideas once the new Community Center is closer to completion.
· Transportation Subcommittee - Briana Meyer, Chair
Commissioner Briana Meyer reported on the subcommittees discussion on
the problems with the current transportation system for youth in Encinitas.
Subcommittee members suggested that the current system is not convenient
or consistent with their needs. The subcommittee is researching other cities
and may do a survey. The next subcommittee meeting will be September 18
"at 4P.M. Community Services staff will secure a room for the meeting. A
community workshop flyer for improvements to the bike lanes on S. Coast
Highway 101 was passed out.

10. COMMISSIONERS CORNER
A. Commissioners
Chairperson Summer Meyer announced that San Dieguito Academy's Back to
School Dance will be September 14.
B. Staff
Recreation Coordinator Rubenstein passed out a sheet for Commissioners to
place their Commission sweatshirt order and asked for volunteers for the
Encinitas Day event.
