1995-05-19 CITY OF ENCINITAS SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION MINUTES Date: May 19, 1995 1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL Chairperson Hartley called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. Present: Chairperson Hartley 1 Vice Chairperson Black 1 Commissioners Springerl Norlingl Small and Reahm. Also Present: Pamela Alexander 1 Recreation Superintendent, and Jacklyn Dakovich, Administrative Secretary Absent: Regina Ash 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE 3 . ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. Approval of Minutes for April 211 1995 meeting. MSC COMMISSIONER SPRINGER MOVED, VICE CHAIRPERSON BLACK SECONDED TO APPROVE MINUTES OF APRIL 21, 1995 MEETING. MOTION CARRIED. 6-0. 5. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Status Report on Project Care. Recreation Superintendent Alexander gave a brief overview on the proj ect Care Program, and distributed copies of the finished brochure to the Commission. Chairperson Hartley commented on the Project Care forum held today in San Marcos. Recreation Superintendent Alexander advised the Commission that the local Rotary Club would like to participate in the home improvement segment of Project Care. 4A-- \ -". B. Status Report on Senior Information Fair. Recreation Superintendent Alexander gave a brief status report on the Senior Information Fair and distributed Information Fair brochure to the Commission. She also reviewed the various assignments for Fair day. C. Update Report on Ad Hoc Sub-committees. Chairperson Hartley reported that the Senior Center Advocacy Ad Hoc Sub-committee was meeting with various groups to discuss direction and common goals of the groups as well as the community. Vice Chairperson Black reported on the Mental Health Ad Hoc Sub-committee, noting they will meet to discuss and plan a public seminar and will have a report for the Commission in August. Commissioner Norling reported that as part of the Outreach Ad Hoc Sub-committee, he had attended and spoke at recent City Council meeting, announced the upcoming Senior Information Fair and distributed Fair brochure. 6. NEW BUSINESS A. None. 7 . ANNOUNCEMENTS A. Commissioners Commissioner Small advised she had been contacted by Councilmember Lou Aspell regarding the need for volunteer school crossing guards and suggested that seniors would be a great resource for this program. Commissioner Small advised she was going to discuss the feasibility of this program with AARP, and also the possibility of using AARP volunteers. Commissioner Springer advised that the National Council on Aging had invited her to participate in a trip to China, sponsored by the Citizen Ambassador Program of People to People International. Chairperson Hartley advised the Commission that in conversation with Mayor DuVivier, he was assured of the Mayor's support of the Senior Center Advocacy Group and a stronger partnership between seniors and the City.
