SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION
MINUTES
Regular Meeting Date: January 19, 2007 1:00 p.m.
1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
Chairperson Vance called the meeting to order at 1:02 p.m.
Present: Chairperson Vance, Vice Chairperson King, Commissioners Finch,
Harp, Drielsma, Larson, and Tillotson.
Also
Present: Department Director Hazeltine, Recreation Superintendent Fazzio, Program
Assistant Pfeil.

3. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS

David Oakley of the Senior Foundation promoted the 9 Annual Encinitas Follies to be

held February 11 at the La Paloma Theatre. All proceeds will benefit the Encinitas
Senior Center.
4. CHANGES TO AGENDA
None.
5. CLOSING AND ADOPTION OF CONSENT CALENDAR
A. Approval of minutes for Regular Meeting October 27, 2006.
COMMISSIONER HARP MOVED, COMMISSIONER FINCH SECONDED TO APPROVE
MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING, OCTOBER 27, 2006. MOTION CARRIED 7-0.
6. PRESENTATIONS
A. Senior Center Manager Goodsell and Transportation Coordinator Dupler spoke
about the Out and About program. They provided background information and also
presented the current budget for the program. The Commission asked several questions
concerning the budget and avenues to take in order to economize and to save money.
Senior Center Goodsell responded that she will provide more details at the next meeting.
7. OLD BUSINESS
A. Status Report on Project C.A.R.E.
Department Director Hazeltine reviewed the Project C.A.R.E. statistical report for
November and December.
B. Status Report on Senior Center at Oakcrest Park.
Department Director Hazeltine handed out flyers and discussed several upcoming
events. The Health and Wellness Fair will be held at the Encinitas Community and Senior

Center January 27. Middle Eastern Belly Dance will be a new class held at the Senior
Center. Department Director Hazeltine also handed out the current Golden years
Gazette.
C. Evaluation of Christmas Parade Participation.
The Commissioners remarked that they had a wonderful time in the parade and are
looking forward to participating next year.
D. Update Report on Ad Hoc Sub-Committees. (Outreach Information,
Transportation Review, Senior Housing Review, Senior Disaster Preparedness
and Representative Reports)

Senior Housing –
Chairperson Vance shared a newspaper clipping regarding a new
senior community that has been approved on Manchester near San Elijo Lagoon.
Senior Disaster Preparedness
– Commissioner Drielsma spoke regarding earthquakes.
Commissioner Finch expressed concern that there is no current evacuation plan for the
City.

Encinitas Senior Foundation Review
– Commissioner Harp remarked on the additions
to the new Living Room at the Senior Center and also plugged the Follies again.
A.I.S. Review
– Superintendent Fazzio handed out the minutes for the most recent
meeting.
8. NEW BUSINESS
A. Status Report of Senior Commission Appointments.
Department Director Hazeltine spoke regarding the process of re-appointment. The

deadline to re-apply is January 22 at 6pm.
9. COMMISSIONER’S CORNER/ANNOUNCEMENTS
A. Commissioners
Commissioner Tillotson remarked she is considering not reapplying for the Commission.
She still plans to be involved in Senior Outreach.
Commissioner Larson mentioned that Senior Center Manager Goodsell implemented
ladies choice at the Senior dances.
Commissioner Harp has tickets for the Encinitas Follies if anyone would like to purchase
them.
Commissioner Finch reported that she contacted Senior Center Manager Goodsell and
there is a presentation planned at the Senior Center regarding emergency services.
Commissioner Drielsma reported that he and Department Director Hazeltine met with the
Education Liaison Committee regarding his proposal for seniors to provide volunteer
teaching.
Vice Chairperson King thanked Christie and Gail for their presentation. He also
welcomed Recreation Superintendent Fazzio to the Commission.
B. Staff
Department Director Hazeltine announced the City Council goal setting session. The

second portion will be held Monday, January 22 at 4pm in the Poinsettia Room.
The Senior Information Fair will be held in May. More details to follow.
Department Director Hazeltine also introduced Teri Fazzio as the new Recreation
Superintendent and the Senior Commission staff liaison.
Superintendent Fazzio provided some background information regarding her Recreation
career and is looking forward to working with the Commission.
