CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
Vice Chairperson King called the meeting to order at 1 :05 p.m.

A. Status Report on Project C.A. R. E.
Department Director Hazeltine reviewed the Project C.A.R.E. statistical report for July
and August.

B. Status Report on Senior Center at Oakcrest Park.
Department Director Hazeltine presented an article in the Union Tribune highlighting the
August Senior Dance. He also provided flyers announcing the next Senior Dance on
September 15th, a free senior safety presentation scheduled for September 20th, and the
Angel's Depot Free "Food for A Wee'K' Program all to be held at the Encinitas Senior
Center.
C. Update Report on Ad Hoc Sub-Committees. (Outreach Information,
Transportation Review, Senior Housing Review, Senior Disaster Preparedness
and Representative Reports)
Outreach - No Report
Transportation - Director Hazeltine provided an update on the Out and About Program.
The total budget for fiscal year is $18,000 and the expenditures to date are at $1,415.96.
The program currently has 37 volunteer drivers, 74 passengers, and 9 seniors on the
waiting list.
Senior Housing - No Report

Senior Disaster Preparedness - Commissioner Drielsma presented a brochure from
the L.A. Times regarding earthquake preparedness and asked if the Commission could
request copies to hand out. Chairperson Vance responded that since the brochure was
copyrighted by the Southern California Earthquake Center then that's who needed to be
contacted.
Council Contact - Chairperson Vance and Vice Chairperson King reported that they
attended the Commissioner's Breakfast on June 27th.
Encinitas Senior Foundation Review - Commissioner Harp handed out a summary of
contributions made by the Senior Foundation to the Senior Center. He also announced
the new website address at www.esfencinitas.org.

9. COMMISSIONER'S CORNER/ANNOUNCEMENTS
A. Commissioners
(
Vice Chairperson King announced that the Commission was the first confirmed entry in
this year's Christmas Parade to be held on December 2nd. He also commented on the
upcoming departure of City Manager Miller.

Commissioner Drielsma reported that he met with Department Director Hazeltine about
developing a program in which senior citizens could share their various skills and
knowledge to students. Together they will present a proposal to the School District
Liaison Committee during their next meeting scheduled for October 30th.
Commissioner Harp asked again for everyone to visit the Encinitas Senior Foundation
website at www.esfencinitas.ora.
Commissioner Tillotson reported that 140 people attended the Interfaith Hour of Prayer at
Moonlight Beach on September 11th. She also requested assistance for someone in
need who could not get help from various local agencies. Commissioner Harp will give
Commissioner Tillotson the name and number of someone who might be able to help.
Chairperson Vance mentioned an article about a case in Oceanside involving a senior
housing complex and possible acceptance of non-senior residents.
B. Staff
Department Director Hazeltine made the following announcements:
The City Of Encinitas 20th Anniversary Celebration will be held at Cottonwood Creek Park
on October 1, 2006. All Commissioners from all Commissions are invited to volunteer in
the food courts. The Volunteer Recognition Dinner is scheduled for October 23rd. The
Sister City Treaty Signing Ceremony will be held Friday September 29th at 6pm at the
Community Center with a $10.00 fee. There will also be a mile marker unveiling showing
the distance between Encinitas and Amakusa, Japan. Shirley Finch will be the newest
Senior Citizen Commissioner and will be appointed on September 20th. Public Works
Director Cotton has been offered the position of City Manager and is expected to be
appointed at the next City Council meeting.
