The scope of our services was to provide in-place density testing during trench backfill operations. Testing and observations were performed during pipeline placement on pipe base, pipe zone, trench zone, aggregate baserock, and asphaltic concrete paving. Testing was performed from September 10, 1991 to May 8, 1992. Test results were reported verbally and by daily field reports to the OMWD inspector and contractor foreman. Test areas failing to meet project specifications were reworked by the contractor and retested. The contractor for the work was Chilcote, Inc. c'-- Pipe bedding and trench backfill materials were placed and compacted in general accordance with project plans and specifications. Trench backfill above the pipe zone was typically placed in 12 to 18 inch lifts and compacted using caterpillar 225 equipped with a sheepsfoot roller. Between approximately stations 140+30 and 141 + 15 (area of creek crossing) relatively soft, wet, native materials were overexcavated to about 2 to 3 feet below the pipe invert elevations and replaced with rock refill. Dewatering was performed in the vicinity of the creek in order to facilitate the placement and compaction of the rock refill. CopY!Ílht 1992. Kleinfclder. IDe. Project No. 51-1684-01 Page 2 The maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of samples of fill material were evaluated in our laboratory in substantial conformance with ASTM test procedure D1557. The maximum density of samples of asphalt concrete were evaluated in our laboratory in substantial conformance with ASTM test procedure D2041. The results of these tests are presented on Table 1. In-place density tests were performed in substantial conformance with ASTM test procedures D2922 and D3017 ("Standard Test Method for Density of Soil and Soil- Aggregate In-Place by Nuclear Method (shallow depth), Water Content of Soil and Rock In-Place by Nuclear Methods (shallow depth), and by ASTM D1556 (In-Place Density by Sand Cone Methods). Results of these tests, at the specific locations tested, are presented on Table 2 entitled "Compaction Test Summary". Conformance testing was performed on pipe base, and pipe zone materials. Results of these tests are presented on Table 3. Density test results and observations indicate that the work our firm observed and tested was performed in substantial conformance with the geotechnical engineering investigation recommendations, dated October 23, 1990 and with the approved project plans and specifications.
