REFERENCE: "Response to Correction List and Additional Recommendations, Proposed Residence; Southern California Soil and Testing, Inc;.; June 3, 1994. Dear Mr. Rich; This letter has been prepared to verify that Southern California Soil and Testing, Inc., has performed in - place density tests to determine the relative compaction of the foundation soils for the proposed property ine retaining walls (Pha ase I per lens re b { P n prepared by La Caste Engineering, dated February 1, 1995). The tests indicate relative compactions exceeding the minimum 90 percent required. A formal report presenting the locations and results of our in -place density tests will he submitted after the rest of the work is finished. If you should have any questions regarding this report, please do not hesitate to contact this office. This opportunity to be of professional service is sincerely appreciated. Gentlemen: ' In accordance with re our request, this report has been prepared to summarize the results of the in- Y q P P P ' place density tests performed at the subject site by Southern California Soil and Testing, Inc. These tests were performed between March 27 and April 28, 1995. SITE DESCRIPTION The subject site is located at 1316 Neptune Avenue, in the City of Encinitas, California. The areas ' tested were associated with the construction of perimeter retaining walls as well as small miscellaneous retaining walls west of the existing structure. ' SCOPE OF SERVICE ' The scope of our work consisted of performing in -place density tests on the foundation soils of the perimeter retaining walls as well as the backfill of said wall. In addition, the backfill of small ' retaining walls west from the structure were also tested. The tests were performed on an on -call basis. Where observed, compaction was performed using a hand whacker. AVAILABLE PLANS To assist in determining the locations and elevations of our field density tests and to define the ' general extent of the site grading for this phase of work, we were provided with a grading plan (site retaining wall details) prepared by La Costa Engineering, dated February 1, 1995. ' SCS &T 8921037 May 4, 1995 Page 2 FIELD TESTING ' Field density tests were performed by Southern California Soil and Testing, Inc. The density tests were taken according to ASTM D1556 -82 (sand cone) and D2922 -81 (nuclear gauge). The ' location and results of those tests are shown on the attached plates. The locations and elevations of the in -situ tests were determined in accordance with survey control provided by other than ' Southern California Soil and Testing, Inc. representatives. Unless otherwise noted, their locations and elevations were determined by pacing and hand level methods and should be considered accurate only to the degree implied by the method used. ' LABORATORY TESTS ' Maximum dry density determinations were performed on a representative sample of the soils used in the compacted fills according to ASTM D1557 -78, Methods A and C. Method A specifies that a four (4) inch diameter cylindrical mold of 1/30 cubic foot volume be used and that the soil tested be placed in five (5) equal layers with each layer compacted by twenty -five (25) blows of a 10- ' pound hammer with an 18 -inch drop. Method C specifies that a six (6) inch diameter cylindrical mold of 1/13 cubic foot volume be used and that the soil tested be placed in five (5) equal layers with each layer compacted by fifty -six (56) blows of a 10 -pound hammer with an 18 -inch drop. The results of these tests, as presented on Plate Number 2, were used in conjunction with the field ' density tests to calculate the degree of relative compaction of the compacted fill. ' CONCLUSIONS ' Based on our field observations and the in -place density test results, it is the opinion of Southern California Soil and Testing, Inc. that the grading work was performed substantially in accordance with the City of Encinitas grading ordinance, and the Uniform Building Code. Recommendations ' for the minimum design of foundations, as presented in the referenced report, remain applicable.
