Our firm provided the grading plan for the subject. The approved plan was available to us on-site and was used in the determination of the following grade and structure elevations. All construction work was provided by others. We have not set any grade stakes, boundary stakes or other control for this project and make no representations whatsoever other than the specific statement as follows: Certification Statement: I performed a vertical check only on the: existing slab; proposed basement slab; rough grade immediately adjacent to the South of the proposed basement slab. I state herein that all of these elevations are as per the abovenoted plan. Please call with any questions. cc Curt Horst, owner file Jon Blake L.S.4368 Expires 0 9írŒ9~ U 'Ill Œ ill ill NOV 2 6 1991 CITY OF ENCINITAS DEPT. OF PUBLIC WORKS ENGINEERING DEPT. Mr. C ur tHo r s t 1058 Third Street Encinitas, CA 92024 Re fer ence: PRELIMINARY GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION proposed Second Story Addition and Driveway Improvements 1058 Third Street Encinitas, California Prepared by A.R. Barry and Associates Dated July 10, 1990 Dear Mr. Horst, In response to your request, we have performed density testing on the above referenced property. The project entailed the placement of fill behind a newly constructed garage retaining wall. The fill will support the proposed concrete driveway. The placement of fill was completed prior to thi s study. The '. depth of fill varies from about 1.0 foot to approximately 9.0 i~ feet. November 22, 1991 W.O. tG-1178A pag e 2 SUPPLEMENTAL FIELD INVESTIGATION Exploration in the driveway area included the excavation of two test pits and the drilling of a 6.0 inch diameter exploratory boring to a depth of 8.0 feet. Earth materials encountered were visually classified and logged by our field geologist. Representative sample s of the fill deposits were taken at selected intervals in the exploratory boring. In place density tests (AS~1 D 1556) were performed in the test pits. LABORATORY TESTING Classification The field classification was verified through labora tory examination in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System. The final classification is shown on the enclosed Boring Log s. Moisture/Density The field moistur e content and dry unit weight were determ ined for each 0 f th e undisturbed soil samples. The information is useful in providing a gross picture of the soil consistency between exploratory excavations and any local variations. ." ~ The dry unit weight was determined in pounds per cubic foot. The field moisture was dete rmined as a percentage of the dry uni t we igh t. November 22, 1991 W.O. #G-1178A pag e 3 Maximum Dry Density/Optimum Moisture Content The max im um dry density and optimum moistur e content were determined for selected samples of earth materials taken from the si tee The laboratory standard tests were in accordance with ASTM D-1557-78. The results 0 f th e tests are presented in Appendix "A." Relative Density The in-situ unit weight of a soil is expressed as a percentage of a maximum defined by laboratory standard test ASTM D-1557-78. This relative density was determined for selected samples of earth materials taken from the site. The results are tabulated in Appendix "A." GEOLOGIC CONDITIONS Most of the fill deposits are composed of reddish brown silty and fine-grained sand obtained from the garage excavation. The upper 2.0 feet of fill is composed of whitish tan silty sand which was imported. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS 1. The results of our limited testing indicate that the fill was placed to a minimum of 90 percent of the laboratory maximum dry density. November 22, 1991 W.O. #G-1178A pag e 4 2. The fill is pred ominan tly granular deposits with an expansion potential in the very low range. 3. Although our limited study indicates the fill was adequately compacted, it is possible that localized loose pockets exist in areas that were not tested. In order to reduce the possibility of adverse effects of consolida tion, the proposed driveway slab should be reinforced with No. 3 bar s placed 18 inches on center in both directions. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at (619) 753-9940. The opportunity to be of service is greatly appreciated. Respectfully submitted, A.R.
