(GSI), for the utility trench backfill and subgrade and aggregate base testing for the subject site. UTILITY LINE TRENCH BACKFILL Select native onsite soils and import soils were used as backfill for the sewer utility trenches. The required compaction was achieved by mechanical means. The minimum compaction required was 90 percent of the laboratory standard. SUBGRADE AND AGGREGATE BASE TESTING The exposed subgrade was tested to a depth of 12 inches. Our tests indicate that the materials meet or exceed the minimum requirement of 95 percent relative compaction of the laboratory standard. Our tests indicate that the aggregate base materials meet or exceed the minimum requirement of 95 percent relative compaction of the laboratory standard. FIELD TESTING 1. Field density tests were performed using nuclear densometer ASTM test methods 0-2922 and 0-3017. The test results are presented in the attached Table 1. 8 8 2. Field density tests were taken at periodic intervals and random locations to check the compactive effort provided by the contractor. Based upon the operations observed, the test results presented herein are considered representative of the compacted fill. 3. Visual classification of the soils in the field was the basis for determining which maximum density value to use for a given density test. LABORATORY TESTING The laboratory maximum dry density and optimum moisture content for the major soil types within this construction phase were determined according to test method ASTM D- 1557. The following table presents the results: Soil T e Maximum Density c A - Silty Sand, Yellowish Brown B - A re ate Base 130,0 138.0 10.0 7.0 REGULATORY COMPLIANCE Placement of compacted backfills under the purview of this report have been completed using the observation and selective testing services provided by representatives of GSI. Earthwork was performed in general compliance with the Grading Code of City of Encinitas, California. Our findings were made in conformance with generally accepted professional engineering practices, and no further warranty is implied or made. GSI assumes no responsibility or liability for work, testing, or recommendations performed or provided by others. This report is subject to review by the controlling authorities for this project. Dear Sir: This report presents a summary of the geotechnical testing and observation services provided by GeoSoils, Inc, (GSI), during the rough earthwork phase of development of the subject site. Earthwork commenced April 21, 1997, and was completed on April 24, 1997, Based on the observations and testing performed by GSI, it is our opinion that the building pad appears suitable for its intended use. Utility and pavement construction will be reported under a separate cover. PURPOSE OF EARTHWORK The purpose of grading was to prepare a relatively level pad for the construction of a two- story, wood-frame office building. Prior to grading, previous structures and associated improvements were demolished and removed from the site. In addition, an apparent seepage pit was backfilled with Portland concrete. ENGINEERING GEOLOGY The geologic conditions exposed during the process of grading were regularly observed by a representative from our firm. The geologic conditions encountered generally were as anticipated as presented in the referenced report (GSI, 1996). I I I I I I I I I :1 I I : I I I I I I I I I GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING Preparation of Existing Ground 1. Prior to grading, the major surficial vegetation and previously existing development was stripped and hauled offsite. 2. The site was then cut to grade, and cut materials were exported from the site. LABORATORY TESTING Expansive soil conditions have been evaluated for the site. A representative sample of the soils near pad grade was recovered for expansion index testing. Expansion index testing was performed for the typical foundation soil type exposed at pad grade in general accordance with Standard 18-2 of the Uniform Building Code, The test result indicates an expansion index of 1 and expansion classification of very low. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Unless superseded by recommendations presented herein, the conclusions and recommendations contained in the referenced report (GSI, 1996) remain pertinent and applicable. REGULATORY COMPLIANCE Processing of original/existing ground and placement of compacted fills under the purview of this report have been completed under the observation of and with selective testing provided by representatives of GSI and are found to be in general compliance with the requirements of the City of Encinitas, California, Our findings were made in conformance with generally accepted professional engineering practices, and no further warranty is implied or made, GSI assumes no responsibility or liability for work, testing, or recommendations performed or provided by others.
