Box 348 Encinitas, CA 92024 (619) 753-9940 December 14, 1990 Tom and Carolyn Cope 2053 Freda Lane Cardiff, CA 92007 Subject: FINAL GEOTECHNICAL REPORT 47 McNeill Avenue Encinitas, California Reference: PRELIMINARY GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION Proposed Single-Family Residence 47 McNeill Avenue Encinitas~ California prepared by A. R. Barry and Associates Dated December 15, 1989 Dear Mr. and Mrs. Cope, This report presents the res~ts of our inspections, observations and field density testing dur ing the construction phase on the above referenced property. The pr oje ct included the cutting of a west-facing slope for a basement/garage area. The placement of fill on the site was predominantly along the outside of the retaining walls. The resul ts of our dens i ty tests are present on Table I. The approximate location of these tests is shown on the enclosed Site Plan, Plate I. LABORATORY TEST DATA The laboratory standard for determining the maximum dry density was performed in accordance with ASTM D 1557-78. Field density December 13, 1990 W.O. #=G-1143 P ag e 2 tests were performed in accordance with ASTM D 1556. The resul ts of the labora tory max im urn dry density, for the soil used as compacted fill on the site, is summarized below: Description MaxL~um Dry Density (p.c.f.) Optim urn Moisture (%) Tan to brown fine- and medium-grained sand 125 8.8 EXPANSIVE SOILS The so ils in the building pad areas are pr edominantly granul ar depos its which exhibit a potential expansion in the very low range. DI SCU SSI ON S 1. The existing residence was demolished and disposed of off- site. Our initial inspection was dur ing the grading operation for the basement/garage area. A vertical seepage pit (cesspool) wa s e ncoun ter ed in the southeastern portion of the excava tio n. The pi t was dry and was subsequently filled wi th crushed rock to within 3.0 feet of the pad grade. Compacted fill was utilized in the upper few feet of the pad and compacted with heavy earth moving equipment. 2. As required by the city of Encinitas, s~uctural footing excava tions for the residence were inspected by a December 13,1990 w.o. #G-1143 P ag e 3 representative this prior to pouring concrete. firm of Inspection reports for the footings and slab areas observed are enclosed in this report. 3. Onsite ma ter ials used fill the behind earth were as constructed retaining walls. Th e fill in lifts was placed of about 6.0 to 8.0 inches thick, moistened as required and compacted to a minimum of the laboratory of 90 percent maximum dry density. 4. The r esul ts density testing indicates that the fill 0 four was placed in an adequate manner. 5. Finish grading should provide po sitive away from drainage founda tions. All drainage on the site should be maintained. Pad water should not be allowed to pond or flow over slopes. The ons i te deposits generally pervious. OVer earth are wa ter ing of vegetation will result in the infiltration of water into footing subsoils. Watering of the and slab vegetation should be limited that amoun t necessary to to sustain plant life. December 13, 1990 w.
