A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ENCINITAS
ENDORSING THE SAN DIEGUITO AQUATIC CENTER FOUNDATION'S EFFORTS
TO DEVELOP AN AQUATIC CENTER IN THE CITY OF ENCINITAS
WHEREAS, surveys indicate that swimming is the most common active recreational
activity in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the community of Encinitas has expressed a need for a high quality swim
center and recreation facility capable of meeting the recreational, instructional, and
competitive swimming and diving needs of the community; and
WHEREAS, the San Dieguito Aquatic Center Foundation is a non-profit, tax-exempt
organization that has proposed the development of the San Dieguito Aquatic Center which
includes facilities that meets the recreational, instructional and competitive swimming and
diving needs of the community; and
WHEREAS, the San Dieguito Aquatic Center Foundation has submitted program,
economic and other information to the City Council and desires to pursue the opportunity for
the development, operation and maintenance of the San Dieguito Aquatic Center in
cooperation with the City of Encinitas; and
WHEREAS, establishment of the San Dieguito Aquatic Center would provide the
North San Diego County with a swimming and diving complex capable of accommodating
sanctioned regional swimming and diving events, including interscholastic events, thereby
contributing to tourism while providing a regional recreational asset to the public; and
WHEREAS, the City Council has determined that it is in the community interest to
further consider and pursue the development of the San Dieguito Aquatic Center as proposed
by the San Dieguito Aquatic Center Foundation; and
WHEREAS, the San Dieguito Aquatic Center Foundation has stated the need for a
reasonable commitment from the City Council to the project in the form of a resolution
declaring the City Council's intentions in order for fundraising for the project to proceed;
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Encinitas resolves as follows:
The City Council hereby expresses its intention to cooperate with the San Dieguito Aquatic
Center Foundation for the purpose of pursuing the development and siting, within 6 months,
of the San Dieguito Aquatic Center in the City of Encinitas.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this llth day of October, 2000, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Bond, DuVivier, Guerin, Holz.
NAYS: None.
ABSENT: Cameron.
